Code of Ethics Governing the Local Groups of the MNNE

It is the goal of the Metis Nation in New England to maintain an integrity that both conforms to the established principles of the US Metis Alliance as well as the unabridgeable traditions of our ancestors. We therefore set the following guidelines as a Code Of Ethics that must govern any local group who wishes to affiliate with the MNNE.

It is our hope that all those wishing to be involved find this Code agreeable, and as being based on the common sense that has been handed down to us through generations of Wisdomkeepers.

  • Membership of Local Groups

All members must meet the three basic requirements as set out in Qualifications for Membership in the MNNE. Failure to do so could jeopardize the Sovereign status of the MNNE as well as the US Metis Alliance.

  • Illegal activities

The MNNE upholds the Law of the Land unless such law violates our rights as indigenous people. Any group conducting illegal activity that violates human rights or any law of the land that does not conflict with our rights as indigenous people will be removed as an affiliate group through an act of the Great Council of Elders until such time as the violation is rectified or the leadership of said group is removed and a new election takes place that puts the local group within these guidelines for proper conduct.

  • Medicine and Spirituality

As Metis People, we respect the traditions of our ancestors. There can be no tolerance for the selling of medicine or spiritual items to enhance the funds of the Local Groups. Any group found to be practicing this act will be removed as an affiliate of the MNNE through an act of the Great Council of Elders until such time that it comes to a stop or the leadership of said local group is removed and a new election can take place in order to bring the group into accord with this guideline.

  • Participation in National Affairs

The purpose of the MNNE is to bring the Metis people together. Our hope is that all Local Groups will be willing to participate in the affairs of the MNNE to the best of their abilities. Of utmost importance, in order to maintain our "grass roots" base, we request that Local Groups contribute in the nomination and elections of administrators, elders, and any other leadership the Nation may require. Participation on this level will assure that all Local Groups will have strong representation within the Nation.

Participation in Nation meetings via representation from all Local Groups will be necessary so that the MNNE can remain on top of the needs of the membership as well as keep track of the growth of the Nation. Regular reporting of new members, activities and development should be handled by all Locals on a monthly basis.

Because the Metis Nation in New England does not charge a membership dues, the MNNE must rely on donations from the Affiliated Local Groups for things like supplies for conducting governmental business, annual gathering expenses, assisting the US Metis Alliance with their annual Assembly as agreed to in the US Metis Alliance Agreement, etc. Donations can be made as the Local Groups' funds allow and as the need arises. There are no requirements set forth for donating as it is strictly voluntary. It is up to you to determine how strong the Nation will be.
