- MF Movies -

Deep Impact - The sky is falling and Pres. Beck goes on TV to tell everybody to keep their heads. MF gives an upstanding performance as the Chief Executive. On second thought, considering the present state of those in the various branches of our Government, sometimes I wish he'd run. Also check out the DEEP IMPACT WebRing.

Hard Rain - Jim (MF's role) and his gang of mostly amateur thieves are after an armored truck for its millions. Will they get it? Can Christian Slater stop them? Will it ever stop raining? Water's deeper than the plot, but there's lots of action.

Here's a clip from ET Online- Morgan Freeman on reading the "Hard Rain" script

Amistad - Story of the 1839 controversy about the taking over of a slave ship by its human cargo. This film did not get the credit it deserved. Although it could have been more factual (the African Violet scene is one of the more glaring errors) Debbie Allen and Steven Spielberg give us a good place to start a dialogue on the ramifications of the 'peculiar institution' of slavery in America. Fine performances all around, especially from Djimon Hounsou as Cinque, leader of the Africans' revolt.

Kiss the Girls - Adapted from the James Patterson novel. MF here plays 'Doctor Detective' Alex Cross, a super-sleuth who can do it all, from talking the desperate out of suicide to profiling serial killers to raising two children as a single father. He even finds the time to train neighborhood kids in boxing. But his crusade against crime becomes personal when his niece is abducted.

Moll Flanders - An elegant site, courtesy of MGM/UA. This film is a riff on rather than a retelling of the classic novel by Daniel Defoe. Nevertheless it's one of my favorites, largely because of MF's character Hibble.

Chain Reaction - Well, I had to do it. Comment on the worst film I have seen MF co-star in yet. Of course it's not his fault. He makes a sterling effort, but this picture's still a God-awful mess- a true stinkbomb that had nothing to do with hydrogen and everything to do with Keanu Reeves' lack of a performance, though I daresay he could give Al Gore a run for his money in the wooden expression department. Even though the official Web site is long gone (victim of the filmmakers' embarrassment or a Government conspiracy? You decide) here are some other links- a review from 99lives.com and a site on the Argonne facility and other locations for the film shoot in the Chicago area.

Unforgiven - A powerful, unconventional Western. Just one page of this comprehensive Clint Eastwood site.

The Power of One - Based on Bryce Courtenay's book about a boy growing up in WWII-era South Africa. MF portrays Geel Piet, a prisoner who coaches the young protagonist.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - If you haven't caught this Kevin Costner stinker (no, it's not QUITE as bad as THE POSTMAN) be sure to rent or borrow it from your local public library. It's worth it just for the laughs. Watch this PC Earl of Loxley bumble through with no trace of an English accent, as his faithful stalwart Azeem (MF's role) grimaces (at Kevin's performance?) and shows up the Merry Men at every turn with his culture's superior knowledge and technology. Then go rent Mel Brooks' spoof Men in Tights and compare. Easily the second most mockable film in the MF repertoire.

Glory - A fine film about the trials and triumphs of the Mass.54th in the Civil War. For more on the score and its composer, try Glory- An Online Magazine Dedicated to the Music of James Horner.

The Electric Company - Long before there was an "ELE" our intrepid MF put in a lengthy stint on this show from the creators of Sesame Street. According to one interview, the work was so undemanding that it drove him to drink! Nonetheless, many who grew up in the 1970's have fond memories of his character Easy Reader. There are some songs and sound clips here in RealAudio format. An album cover featuring MF and other cast members may be viewed at the Music Merchant Sesame Street Collectible Vinyl site.
