In memory of The Valley of Heart's Delight

The Silicon Valley. A place that is the envy of the world. Our high-tech industry, wealth, and success are famous. But that name, "The Silicon Valley"...only focuses on a fraction of what this place is all about.

There is much more to this valley then the Silicon Valley High-tech industry. It ignores generations of people, places and events that have been a part of this valley's long history. So, I dislike using that name to describe this area as a whole. The real name for this valley, and all it encompasses, is the Santa Clara Valley.

It's difficult to grasp that at one time, this area wasn't known as the Silicon Valley, but instead was known as "The Valley of Heart's Delight." Most of the amazing pastoral beauty that inspired such a name has been replaced by track homes, strip malls, and high-tech office campuses

The pages offered to you in this section of A Guide to Mountain View were created in the hopes that they will help you discover the non-Silicon Valley side of the Santa Clara Valley. They are divided into two major categories. The first category offers pictures and stories of the interesting places that are living reminders of the Valley of Heart's Delight.  The second category offers bittersweet memories and historic pictures of places that have been lost to redevelopment.  I hope you enjoy Pages of the Past and I hope through these pages, you'll discover the true essence of what the Santa Clara Valley once was, and what many ways, it will always be.
