
7th Degree Black Belt, Marilyn Fierro, was the first woman inducted into the Isshinryu Hall of Fame, Knoxville, Tennessee, August 1, 1998 and the first woman to be inducted into the OIKKA Hall of Fame in Gettysburg, PA on May 1, 1999. Kyoshi Fierro's list of contributions include:
The creation and development of a woman's "Attack Prevention" program that now runs in 11 Long Island High Schools.
The production of an award winning video tape to correspond with the woman's programs.
Numerous articles in martial arts publications and newspapers.
Several TV appearances including a special with Channel 12 News on Self-Defense issues.
Heading up an informative web site with Newsday on "Attack Prevention" issues.
The creation of a TV show called "Taking Charge" that
has shows on martial arts as well as other subjects including, Therapeutic Horses for the
physically challenged, Feng Shui, and Spiritual Awareness
Sensei Fierro has began her martial arts training in 1972 and in 1974 joined Hanshi Nick Adler and made Okinawan Isshinryu Karate a permanant part of her life. She started teaching in 1976 and in 1978 opened the Smithtown Karate Academy with Nick Adler. In 1980, Sensei Fierro took over the ownership of the academy and maintains a small but devoted group of aproximately 60 students.
