Notice: The original MEDICAL list was used from December 14 1996 until access was temporarily suspended on May 9, 1997, when someone sent thousands of messages to the mail server (a spam), shutting down all the e-mail discussion lists from the University of Indiana maiser mail server. Because of this attack, which prevented legitimate member messages from being posted to the lists, all lists from MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu were suspended.

Larry Stephens of the University of Indiana appealed to the University to be able to continue a few public service lists, and UI agreed to provide space for the Medical list on another server. As of May 22, 1997, the list became MED-STUDENTS-L.
