In general,
TrueType is the most common format for Windows, all current versions.
ATM Type 1 fonts can be installed under Windows 2000 and XP without
addiktional software, but do require Adobe Type Manager under
previous versions. Older versions of OS/2, Unix and Linux can
use the ATM Type 1 Package.The main drawback of ATM fonts is
that they may not print on all printers like ink jet printers,
for instance.

In general,
TrueType is the most common format for Macintosh, all current
versions. The main advantage of TrueType fonts is that they are
compatible with all peripherals and printers, one of the reasons
why Apple system fonts are TrueType. Some special applications
may request PostScript fonts, or some typesetters may insist
on PostScript. The main drawback of PostScript is that they cannot
be displayed as nicely at all point sizes on the screen, and
may not print on all printers like ink jet printers, for instance.
