LAKE RIVIERA MIDDLE SCHOOL'S
In my humble opinion, I have the BEST school newspaper staff! They are dedicated, creative, hard-working, talented, and imaginative. The fifth year for THE LAKER brought amonumentous undertaking. Gone was the SELLING of THE LAKER! VOLUME V ISSUE I was copied 1298 times. This particular issue was also 21 pages long. This was a new record breaker and joins LAKER history. NOTHING like it was ever done....and we learned a few new tricks to the trade.
THE LAKER has been proud to sponsor the "ADOPT-A-CHARITY" and "LAKER LOOT" programs. In addition, we created and sponsor the LAKE RIVIERA ART FAIR in MARCH and the very popular 8TH GRADE POLL in June. The 2000-2001 school year brought the addition of the Student of the Month Rewards Program, "JUST DESSERTS." In 2003, The Laker began sponsoring Student Leadership Day.

This First Group Of Editors Knew How To "ROUGH IT"
the first year of printing. We had no XEROX double-sided copier and had to
staple each LAKER by hand. There was a lot of hard work, but it truly was
a worthwhile experience! This group laid the foundation for a great
LRMS Tradition. They were a joy to work with and they will ALWAYS have a
warm place in my heart for creating THE LAKER.

EVERYONE here wanted to take the school's
newspaper to the limit. There was a new dedication to producing a "bigger
& more powerful" Laker this year. There were THREE
issues of the newspaper printed this year. The Final Edition was a complete
sell-out.

Special Thanks to Kyle Sammond, Rob Jakubowski,
and especially Kory Sammond for one of the most entertaining original pieces
of work to appear in "The Laker" ever. Also, a great job by Billy Joe Bob
Jones from the student council .
This group had HUGE attention to detail and
organization. The LAKER had the sharpest images and most well planned-out
graphics since its conception. The school newspaper took on a new attitude
with commentary, humor and even a more distinct "voice of the student."
The third year in print for The
Laker brought about more attention to perfection and detail.
This was due to the consistent perfectionism brought about by Chris Harper,
Rachel Pannullo and Colleen Poalillo. Volume III Issue I sold more issues
than either publication from the previous year. Then Volume III Issue II
was a record breaker! The paper was successfully marketed throughout
the year with announcements on "Laker Live" and terrific bulletin boards.
The ART FAIR bulletin board, created by Ellie Veldkamp, was one of the most
original boards ever featured in the school and help set a great tone for
the impending artwork.

The Laker took on a technological breakthrough this
year. With a GREAT new look and a new format, the 2000-2001 editing team
made the paper look better than it ever did. New features and articles mixed
with a new attitude made The Laker new and interesting.
There were MANY late afternoons and NIGHTS
spent insuring that The Paper would be a success (EVEN WITH AN UNEXPECTED
SNOWSTORM THROWN IN). The Fall edition of The Laker was a complete
sellout.
There were stinging political editorials, superb
original stories and outstanding extracurricular activities covered during
the year's coverage! The staff of the newspaper remained true to the editors
of the past. They were determined, aggressive, driven for perfection and.....a
lot of fun to work with!

NO one will ever know the difficult task these editors
had in producing an entire school with a free issue of THE LAKER. They showed
much determination and organization in completing this task. THE LAKER rolled
out to every homeroom on the mornings that it was due. These people worked
VERY hard, and it was very appreciated!

The
Legend of
"The
Laker"
During the mythical period of dragons a long time
ago, there lived in the lake waters, creatures who were not yet fully developed.
As these beings continued in their development stage, they would emerge from
the lake to complete their growth on a higher plane. However, no development
could be accomplished without proper growth within the confines of the lake.
Therefore all those within these waters were known and called "The
Lakers".
While at the Lake, these creatures began their
development into mature beings and also began to dream of their growth in
the future. Within the water's limits, each became an individual who developed
his or her own talents that would be used later in life. Here at the lake,
they worked on self-development, knowledge, and maturity so that when they
emerged from these waters, they would be ready to meet the challenges of
their new surroundings.
The growth pattern usually takes three years at
which time creative character strengths are toned and refined so that all
future challenges could be met.
Therefore as the creatures leave the lake, they
are transformed from Lakers to full-grown Dragons.
