Day 1 - Orientation:
AM. First thing - get on one of those open top buses, and drive around central
London for a couple of hours. Take your photos for the people back
home - see Westminster Abbey, St Paul's. Tower Bridge - all the tourist cliches?
Get them off your chest!
PM - get a boat down to Greenwich and visit the Prime Meridian for the
Millennium. See John Harrison's Clocks in the Royal Observatory.
Day 2 The origins of London
AM Guided Walking Tour. This is the day to explore the City of London
founded by the romans in AD50 or thereabouts. Take a City Walking tour,
preferably a 2000 years of history or a Roman London Walk.
Lunch!. and have a lovely lunch at 'The Place Below' in the 11th Century
Crypt of St Mary-Le-Bow! in Cheapside - Get there early to avoid
the queue!
PM Walk to the medieval Guildhall, near Cheapside, and then visit the
glorious Museum of London which will tell you all about London from prehistory
to the present day!
(I used to work there once a long time ago)
Day 3 Medieval London
AM you have to start with a visit to Westminster Abbey - this is such a fine
example of Gothic Architecture
Lunch - either in the Crypt of St Martins-in- the Fields, or in Pret-a-Manger
in the National Gallery and while you are there visit the Salisbury Wing
to visit the medieval paintings which compliment the visit to medieval
Westminster
PM Tube to Smithfield, and visit St. Bartholemew's Priory, Smithfield - a
lovely Norman Church, near the site of the martydom of the rascal William
Wallace, and near the hospital founded in 1123, and still going strong!
Here you will also find a museum of the medieval hospital, and you
will find a Hogarth painting.
Day 4 - Tudor London
AM Visit the Globe Exhibition in the morning if you cannot see a play there
in the Evening!
PM Take the Train from Waterloo to Hampton Court!
Day 5 - Christopher Wren's London
AM - St Paul's
PM Walking tour of the City visiting as many of Wren's Churches as possible.
Ascend the Monument to the Great Fire of London at Monument Tube -
its a great view!
Day 6 Victorian London
AM Visit the Old Operating Theatre Museum in Southwark to see what life was
really like!
PM Visit Leighton House to see what life was really like it you were rich,
talented, and handsome!
Evening: Dickens London Walking Tour
Day 7 - Day out!
You just have to go to Avebury prehistoric Henge (Stonehenge too).. It
is the best archaeology site, the best monument, the best work of art you'll
see!
