Q's & A's, Technical, Facts and Specs
Q: I recently found an 80's 9" disk brake rear that I would like to install into my '66/302 coupe. The owner, a large Mustang parts vendor in Denver, assures me that the axles do not need shortening or the perches moved. I have been under the impression that this is not a bolt up operation, and these alterations need to take place for this rear to fit. Any advice or opinions? (Robb)

A: It could be that your rear end is out of a V8 Granada. A '77 Lincoln Versailles should bolt right in and have disk brakes to boot. Also, the Lincoln has front disks that will install using the Lincoln (Granada) spindles by changing the ball joints and the rod ends. I'm not sure if you use the '66 ball joints or the '77 ball joints, but something Ford will bolt up. As far as the rod ends go, I have a friend that used a bowtie part to put '80 Granada rotors on his '68 coupe, but I have not heard if you can use a Ford part there. Another rear end to look for is a '57 Ranchero 9", but they are hard to find. The street rod guys like the '77 Versailles rear ends for a cheap disk brake rear end, but they usually command big bucks ($425 and up)(zrhdinc@ionet.net)

Q: I have a '66 Coupe (289) with front drums. I'd like to do a bolt-up conversion to disc brakes and am told a '70-something Granada's front discs bolt-up. Any advice or magazine articles which explain the process and potential problems? (Jim)

Q: I am replacing a 302 in a 1969, with a 351C and FMX transmission. What exhaust manifolds or headers does this require and does it present any other problems. (Bill)

A: Right now I'm taking a 289 out of a '67 Mustang and replacing it with a 351C. You will probably need to change your exhaust system or at least your manifold, radiator, and alternator.(cowboy3@ix.netcom.com)
Q: I recently bought a '65 289 2V complete except power steering pump and bracket. I want to convert it to a 4V so it will match the VIN. Am I correct in assuming the only differences are the intake manifold, carb, and dual exhaust? If so, will a 4V intake from the same year bolt on with no problem? (Tom)
Submit your answer or advice
A: I have a '65 289 4V without power steering, and have a friend with a '68 302 2V with a C6xx part number on the intake. As far as I can see, the only difference is the center of the intake, so any 289 4V cast iron intake should fit. Also, many aftermarket aluminum intakes should work (a torkerll is great for a stock motor)(zrhdinc@ionet.net)
Q: I have a '70 Mustang coupe, and am placing a 429cid bored out to 460cid. The engine is touching the shock towers. How can I fix this problem? How did Ford do this?
Submit your answer or advice
A: I am not sure if you are talking about a Boss 429 or a 429. Ford put the Boss 429 in by removing a section of the shock towers and welding in a new piece to add clearance. On a regular 429, I am not sure since it was never offered as an option, but I belive that if it touches, the remedy would be the same as for the Boss 429.(albal@ix.netcom.com)
Q: I currently have a stock 302 in my '7 Mustang GT 5.0. I am thinking about putting in a built up 302 small block and a different transmission. Right now, everything is electronically controlled with overdrive. Will I have to get rid of overdrive and all the electronically controlled things? What do you recommend for getting approximately 525hp? (Paul)

Q: I have a problem with the horn contacts in the steering wheel column on my '66 (woodgrain wheel). The previous owner said there was a short in the horn circuitry, and he had pulled out the two horn rings in the steering column. I pulled the steering wheel off, and found that when you place the metal horn ring on the two horn contacts, the horn sounds, but quite sickly. Also, there is a lot of sparking from the two contacts. Any help? (Mark)

Q: I have a '66 with a 200 6 cylinder, 3 speed transmission, and a 4 lug hub. Can a 289 V8 with automatic transmission fit? What types of modifications will be necessary? (Thomas)

Q: I have a '68 6 cylinder with a 3 speed standard transmission. Can it be converted to an automatic transmission? How should I proceed? Should I try to find someone who wants to switch automatic to standard, or try to find a wrecked I6 automatic?(Peter)

Q: I purchased a kit for the '64-'66 stainless steel brake conversion for my '65 fastback. During the attempt of putting it on, I found that there is no way to do this without modifying the steering. Does anyone know of someone who has done this conversion before who may be able to help with info on how to do it? If I don't find the resources to do it on my car, I'll sell the kit at a loss to Robb in the first question. (Rich)
