In the Bend: 2 July 1914-Estelle McDowell visited her friend Rhoda Scott Saturday night and Sunday
John A. McDowell was absent from Sunday School Sunday. He was suffering from a very serious case of neuralgia.

Hardin Co. Independent: Lamb:3 Sep 1914-Miss Dessie McDowell of Hopkins Chapel visited her cousin Miss Sallie Douglas part of this week
Rosiclare Sentinal 17 Dec. 1914-Francis McDdowell, commonly known as "Ky" McDowell, died at his home last Tuesday morning December 8 at 3 o'clock a.m. of heart disease. He had been sick about two weeks. Interment took place Wednesday afternoon December 9 at the Beavers Cemetery.
He leaves a wife and eleven children besides other relatives. Three smallest children are still at home and they and their mother are preparing to move to Cave-in-Rock right away. They have exchanged the 120 acre farm for Grandama and Grandpa Tom Douglas home.
Hardin Co. Independent: 21 Jan 1915-Mrs. F.M. McDowell has left the Bend for Cave-in-Rock. Willis Crow moved in the house vacated by the family.

Battery Rock: 29 July 1915-Little Herbert Vaughn, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Vaughn, died Sunday July 18th at 3 o'clock age 14 month and 1 day old. He was laid to rest in Brown Cemetery the 19th.
Grandma Vaughn and son Warren and family are visiting the formers daughter, Mrs. John A. McDowell at this writing.
Lamb: Mr. and Mrs. Charles McDowell are the proud parents of a 3 and 1/2 lb baby girl after being dressed. The little lady has attneded church and is growing nicely
Items from Here: 12 Aug 1915-Miss Pearl Shearer arrived here from St. Petersburg, FL Sunday morning on the Lowery. She accompanied the body of Mrs. Harry Boyd, who died in St. Petersburg a few days ago, and which was brought to Cave-in-Rock for interment. The southland must agree with Miss Pearl, for she is looking well and says she feels fine. She will not return for some two months.
Lamb: The sad news was receivbed here last Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Harry Boyd at her home in St. Petersburg, FL. and that the remains would be brought to Cave-in-Rock for burial. Mrs. Boyd was the daughter of the late F.M. McDowell and has a host of friends and relatives here, whose hearts are sad because of her death. Our sincerest sympathy is with the husband and son and brothers and sisters.
In the Bend: 14 Oct 1915-The choir met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John A. McDowell Thursday night. We were one of the number who had the pleasure of listening to the melodious praises, that the band of singers sang to Him who is worthy of all praise. They were instructed by Prof. Hoewisher.

In the Bend: 18 Nov 1915-Mrs. Warren Vaughn has been quite poorly for some time.
In the Bend: 30 Dec 1915-It is with sadness and joy that we announce the death of Uncle William Campbell. With sadness because we will miss him in our Sunday School. It is joy because he expressed a desire to go Home and joy because he was prepared. Rev. Jack Lowery preached his funeral at Hopkins Chapel. A large crowd was present from there to the Brown's graveyard, they took him there he was tenderly laid to rest. He made his home with his daughter Mrs. Dan Frailey. We extend sympathy to the lonely daughter, the bereft and to grand children.
In the Bend 13 Jan 1916-Mrs Flora Vaughn, wife of Warren Vaughn, died Wednesday at 4 p.m. of lung trouble and was buried at Brown's cemetery Thursday. It was sad for dear Flora to leave her little children under the care of a kind and aged grandmother, to leave her dear companion with the little flourettes, so young who need the care of a Christian mother, but the Heavenly Father saw fit to call her home. Let us breathe a prayer that papa will guide their little feet right, that mama some day will be able to clasp them in her arms without the loss of one.
Miss Cleta Shufflebarger, Estelle McDowell, Dessie McDowell and little Miss Madge McDowell were the guests of Miss Lenora Crow Sunday.
In the Bend: 9 Mar 1916-Mrs. Eva McDoiwell, while looking at the eclipse, injured one of her eyes, but is better now.
In the Bend: 16 March 1916-While Mrs. John A. McDowell was preparing dinner a few days ago, one of the legs of the stove was displaced, causing the stove to overturn. This threw the entire hot dinner on their little daughter, Madge, who was standing near. She was burned very badly, but luckily not about the face. She is recovering nicely and will soon be able to occupy her regular place in Sunday School. Little Madge has the honor of being a regualr attendance at Hopkins Chapel Sunday School and was one of the first to receive a book as a prize for her attendance.
In the Bend:13 Apr 1916-Misses Elsie and Rhoda Scott visited their friends the Misses Dessie and Estelle McDowell on Saturday night and attended meeting at Hopkins Chapel.
In the Bend 29 June 1916-Misses Estelle and Dessie McDowell were guests of Cleta Shufflebarger Sunday.
John A. McDowell has sold his home near Hopkins Chapel to Willie Belt. He will build on his farm near McDowell schoolhouse. We shall not lose our good neighbors, Mr. McDowell and family, in the transaction,, but gain a new neighbor. We welcome Mr. Belt and family into our neighborhood circle.
In the Bend: 28 Sep 1916-Little Madge McDowell, who was burned from the stove over turning some time ago is able to attend school. It was thought that an operation would be necessary, but she has out grown the burn and walks straight now.

In the Bend: 12 Apr 1917-Miss Cleta Shufflebarger called on Miss Estelle McDowell Monday. She reports Miss Estelle slowly convelescing from rheumatism.
John A. McDowell has his new 8-room house completed. His house and the new school house being newly painted makes quite a showing up as they are situated near each other.
In the Bend 19 Apr 1917-Those present at the singing given at John A. McDowell;s Saturday night were John Scott and family, Walter Rutherford and family, Walter Beavers and family, Mack Walker and two daughters, Phil Hoewisher and children, Milt Lewis and family, J.T. Douglas and children, Misses Cleta Shufflebarger, Sally Douglas, Tressie Goble, Rhoda Scott, Maggie and Elva Rutherford, Beulah and Hazel Beavers and Lloyd Tyre, Dock Lewis, Wayne Douglas, Ralph Hufsey and Clement and Manfod McDowell.
Lamb 19 Apr 1917-Dock Lewis and Cleta Shufflebarger were the guests of Misses Estelle and Dessie McDSunday evening.
Lamb: 3 May 1917-Lloyd Tyre, Warford Edwards, Ewing Hobbs, Clement McDowell, Manford McDowell and Radfdord Brookmyer were visitors at John A. McDowell;s Sunday.
In the Bend: 17 May 1917-John A. McDowell took his daughter Miss Estelle to Junction, IL for treatment. They were accompanied by Mrs. Annie Shufflebarger who has taken her son C. Wellington to the same place for treatment. They found Dr. Black at that place very busy. His average is about 11 patients a day. Dr. Black treated at one time from 3:30 to 4:30, 13 patients. The people at Junction say they do not need a drug store as Dr. Black does not use medicine. He treats with adjustments.

Lamb: 9 Aug 1917-John A. McDowell gave an ice cream social at his home last week in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell of Supulpa, OK.
Gleanings: 30 Aug 1917-Orval Patton, who has been canvassing for the Yeast Foam Co., returned to this county for examination by our local examining board. He intends remaining with his step-mother, Mrs. Ellen Patton, on her farm near Mt. Zion unless called into military service.

Harris Creek: 24 July 1919-Orval Patton and Clarence Fletcher are two more soldier boys to arrive home from overseas.
Lamb:18 Mar 1920-John A. McDowell entertained the young folks with a musical Saturday night.
Lamb: 25 Mar 1920-John A. McDowell gave an entertainment last week which was well attended.
In the Bend: 14 July 1921-Mrs. Dessie Matthews of Fairfield is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. McDowell.
W.L. Vaughn and son were in bathing in the Ohio River recently and Willie got over a reef and if his father had not been an expert swimmer, he would have drowned. This should be a lesson to the many children who risk their lives by going in the river.
Lamb 10 Nov. 1921-Miss Reka Blair cut one of her fingers off recently. Dr. Gregory is treating her.

In the Bend: 5 Jan 1922-Orval Patton and Miss Estelle McDowell surprised their many friends by driving to Mr. Patton's home Wednesday night and getting married. They were married by Rev. M.F. Oxford. We join their many friends in extending congratulations.
Gleanings: 5 Jan 1922-Orval Patton and Miss Estelle McDowell were married last Wednesday night at Aunt Ellen Pattons'. They tried to have it a quiet wedding, but there was a singing at Baugher School house where Orval found Millard Oxford and when he called him out the crowd followed them and after the wedding Aunt Ellen gave them a nice supper.
Lamb: 25 May 1922-W.L. Vaughn and Emory McDowell have returned from St. Louis where they have been attending a barber college. They both graduated and are licensed barbers. They have not decided just where they will locate, but probably somewhere in Kentucky.
Lamb: 1 June 1922-Mrs. Dessie Matthews of Fairfield is visiting her parents, John A. McDowell and wife.
Garret Boyd of St. Petersburg, FL is visiting his uncle John A. McDowell.
Lamb: 6 July 1922-Emery McDowell left for St. Louis recently.
Hopkins Bend: 27 July 1922-Robert Mattingly and son visited John A. McDowell.
Mr. and Mrs. Orval Patton visited homefolks Saturday and Sunday.
Miss Madge McDowell visited Mrs. Anna Conditt last week and attended camp meeting. She reported a nice time.
Lamb: 10 Aug 1922-Mrs. Nora Mattingly and two of her sons of Harrisburg, IL visited her mother Mrs. Mary Vaughn in this vicinity last week.
W.L. Vaughn, who owns the barber shop at Caseyville, attended church at Antioch Sunday and took dinner with the writer and family. (Willie Winn the writer for Lamb)

Harris Creek 9 Nov 1922-Orval Patton and Wiley Pennell are both yelling papa in a barrel, to give it a good sound, as they both have a fine girl in their home. All parties are doing well.

Mrs. Nora Mattingly came down from Harrisburg to see her mother, Mrs. Jennie Vaughn who is very poorly.
In the Bend: 3 May 1923-Aunt Mary Hamilton died Saturday and was buried Sunday at Brown Cemetery. She got a fall two weeks ago which caused her death. She was 83 years old, leaves two sons, several grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her death.
In the Bend: 10 May 1923-Velda Hoewischer of Weston KY visited her Grandma Tadlock.
Miss Reka Blair visited relatives in Weston, KY.

Hastie's Landing: 10 June 1924-We are sorry to hear of Mrs. Vaughn of Caseyville, KY falling and breaking her hip.
Mrs. Anne Hufsey went to Caseyville, KY to spend a few days. She and daughter Dorothy will return today .(Monday)

Harris Creek: 14 Aug 1924-Mrs. Ellen Patton who has been quite poorly most all summer is making preparations to move to Cave-in-Rock where she will be close to the Doctor that she may receive close attention. Her trouble is dropsy.
Harris Creek: 21 Aug 1924-Doctor Oxford was called to see Mrs. Ellen Patton this (Mon) morning. She is not so well.
In the Bend: 4 Sep 1924-Miss Madge McDowell was the guest of her sister Mrs. Estelle Patton Wednesday night and Thursday.
We are to announce the marriage of Mrs. Annie Hufsey of Cave-in-Rock and Warren Vaughn of Caseyville, KY. They will make their home in Caseyville. We wish them much success in life.

Harris Creek 9 Oct 1924-Mrs. Ellen Patton seems to grow worse each day. She has been very poorly the past few days.
Harris Creek: 13 Nov 1924-Mrs. Ellen Patton is at this writing very poorly again.
Harris Creek: 4 Dec. 1924-(too late for last week) Mrs. Ellen Patton whom we have reported as having dropsy for some time, died at her home near Baugher School house last Thursday morning. She had no children living of her own, but several step children that loved has as a mother and her them as her children. They were all faithful to the end. She was laid to rest in the Angleton cemetery beside her mother. Funeral services by Brother M.F. Oxford.
In the Bend: 12 Feb 1925-Emory McDowell has been visiting his mother, Mrs. Eva McDowell this week. He returned to E.St. Louis Wednesday.
Miss Orba Hufsey and Madage McDowell have been visiting relatives at Caseyville, KY the past week. They returned home Saturday afternoon and reported a nice time.

Harris Creek: 20 Aug. 1925-Orval Patton while attempting to run his car from his burning barn one night last week, was burned very bad on one shoulder and arms and feet. He is in critical condition.
Lamb: 17 Sep 1925-Orval Patton was at the mill Friday. Mr. Patton wanted Mr. Douglas to move the mill near his farm and saw him a barn pattern. Also to do some sawing for his neighbors.
In the Bend: 7 Jan 1926-Avalone Blair and Ruby Rash were married at Cave-in-Rock 24 Dec. 1925. A crowd met at William Blair's and charevaried them Christmas night.
In the Bend: 17 June 1926-Virgil Rutherford and family and Orval Patton and family visited their father-in-laws Sunday.
Lamb: 22 July 1926-Avalon Blair and W.W. Winn made a business trip to E'town Friday.

Scattered news: 24 Feb. 1927-The latest is the arrival of a dishwasher at Orval Pattons. All parties doing well except Orval.

Deserted Valley: 20 Oct. 1927-Orval Patton and family visited his mother near Shawneetown Sunday.
Battery Rock: 10 May 1928-Warren Vaughn and family and also Mrs. Nettie Underwood and Mrs. Della Lewis spent Sunday with Mrs. Orba Scott.
Mrs. Della Lewis visited Mrs. Anna Vaughn Saturday morning.
In the Bend: 28 June 1928-Orval Patton and family spent Sunday with John A. McDowell. Miss LaCene McDowell returned home with her sister Mrs. Estelle Patton to stay a week.
Coon Creek: 6 Feb 1930-John A. McDowell took a load of corn to the Cave a few days ago.
Miss LaCene McDowell is visiting her sister, Mrs. Estelle Patton near Baugher School.
Coon Creek: 20 Mar 1930-A.W. Vaughn fell from the porch Saturday evening and broke his arm.
Several of the young people started to LaCene McDowell's Saturday night to have a play party but found there was none.
Scattered News: 29 May 1930-We sympathize with Mr. and Mrs.Orval Patton in the loss of their infant daughter last week.
Levee Pond: 21 Aug 1930-Orval Patton and family visited Sunday in the Bend of the river.
In the Bend: Mrs. John A. McDowell visited her daughter, Mrs. Orval Patton, her daughter Miss LaCene is staying with Mrs. Patton helping with her work since the baby has been sick.
Harris Creek: 19 June 1930-The small son of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Patton died Wednesday evening.
Card of Thanks: We wish to return sincere thinks to our neighbors and friends during the sickness and after the death of our darling little son, Bobby Dean. Mr. and Mrs. Orval Patton.

Scattered News: 24 Apr 1934-Orval Patton has his new dwelling house started and has two rooms done and is living in them until his home is completed.
Miss LaCene McDowell is carrying her arm in a sling, the result of a dislocated bone.
In the Bend: 14 June 1934-Madge Roberts has been visiting her father John A. McDowell recently.
In the Bend: 30 July 1931-Mr. Warren Vaughn spent a few days with his daughter Mrs. George Reed while Mr. Reed has gone to Chicago.
5 July 1934-INJURED IN SPAR MINES-Bill Vaughn was injured at Spar Mountain Mine at Cave-in-Rock, Tuesday afternoon. A fall of rock caught his right leg, causing a fracture of the bone below the knee. He was taken to Rosiclare Hospital, where his injuries were treated, and he is reported as recovering nicely.
Cave-in-Rock: 12 July 1934-William Vaughn who was badly hurt at the Benson Mines last week is still in the hospital at Rosiclare and will probably be there for at least three weeks longer.
In the Bend 9 Aug 1934-At John Scott's 71 birthday-John A. McDowell and daughter LaCene, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Garland, Bert Scott, Roy Walker and family, Mrs. Verona Hufsey, son Marshall Loy, Robert Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Walter McDowell, Mr. and Mrs. Clement McDowell and family, Mr. and Mrs. Manford McDowell and children, Mrs. Dorothy Douglas and son, Walter Lee, David and William Shores, Gladys Craig, Jake Elder and A.W. Vaughn.
Cave-in-Rock:30 Aug 1934-Willliam Vaughn who has been in the hospital for almost two months came home Sunday. He will probably have to use crutches for quite a while.
Cave-in-Rock-20 Sep 1934-Mrs. William Vaughn was taken to Harrisburg hospital Sunday in a very serious condition from a disease of her left eye with which she had been suffering for a week or so or more. She is under the care of Dr. A.A. Lahman, who reports that her pain is slightly improved, and that he has hopes of saving the eye.
Cave-in-Rock-9 May 1935-Mrs. Mary Pullum visited her daughter Mrs. John Lynn, Caseyville, KY and is back home with her granddaughter Mrs. William Vaughn.
Cave-in-Rock: 16 May 1935-Mr. and Mrs. William Vaughn and little daughter Betty Jo, Georgia Tadlock, Shem Gobel, and Clarence Henry Brittain spent Thursday in Harrisburg.
Cave-in-Rock: 13 June 1935-Mrs. William Vaughn and little daughter Betty Jo returned home Monday from a 10 day visit with Mrs. Vaughn's aunts Anna Tadlock and Etta Littrell.
Cave-in-Rock: 5 Jan 1936-The WPA sewing project for women has opened at Cave-in-Rock and is in operation in a room at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Goerge Moore. Mrs. Roy Kaegi, who is supervisor, has at present 5 assistants who are Mrs. Ella Moore, Mrs Mamie Beymer, the Misses Ella Mason, Ida Hooven and LaCene McDowell. Ewing Belt has been employed as janitor. Up to date about 50 garments have been made.
