"Ballet Folklorico Alma De Mexico"

Ballet: A theatrical work incorporating body positions, dancing, music, and scenery to convey a thematic atmosphere. (Baile) is a festivity were many people gather to dance.
Folklorico: The traditional beliefs, legends, and customs of people.
Alma: (Soul) an immortal spiritual substance that informs the human body and with it forms man's essence.
Mexico: A country rich in traditions and culture.

The Ballet Folklorico Alma De Mexico dance company was founded by Mahdi Najmi, ( Nino Carrillo), a Mexican choreographer now residing in Oxnard. Its first practice was on January 2, l989. Since then , the company has contributed in a very positive way to the union of our community, expanding Mexican culture through the colorful and vibrant dances that develop dramatically through each presentation. Presently we are comprised of over 60 members and technical staff, plus musicians. We have our own Conjunto Jarocho Catemaco and also work very closely with the Mariachi Cuicatlan. We have over $40,000 in costumes, designed and elaborated by Nino Carrillo in the most authentic form known today. Just seeing the beautiful costuming we have is worth any price you pay to see us. We bring at least three instructors direct from Mexico to ensure that our repertoire is as authentic as possible.

In ancient Mexico dance was the accompaniment of the festivities in ritual acts to honor, adore, and entertain the gods. Now we can enjoy prehispanic dance and other dances that reflect the tradition enforced mainly by the Spanish missionaries. These represent struggle, persecution, and animal behavior. They show numerous situations of daily life as well as extraordinary events. Hundreds of years of history and tradition have been dearly kept and we now present them to you, as Bailes Del Alma.

I began my involvement in Folklorico dancing at 15 years of age, when my father encouraged me to join a group in our community. I began attending workshops and visiting groups in Mexico, and I joined the Ballet Folklorico de Zacatecas to learn and increase my dancing abilities. Then, I met an instructor, Mr. España, from Mexico City's at the INBA (Instituto Nacional De Bellas Artes). Through him I met other instructors and did performances in the Flamengo Theatre de Cuernavaca, Morelos, while taking classes at the INBA.

I have a strong desire to share with others the beauty and joy in expressing my culture through dance. Dancing is a way of sharing with others our history, values and the richness that our parents have given us. Dancing folklorico lets me show that I love who I am and helps others to discover this joy and pride. La herencia de nuestros antepasados. " Tu eres mi otro Yo, si yo te amo y te respeto a ti . Yo me amo y me respeto a mi. Si yo te hago daño a ti Yo me hago daño a mi. Tu eres mi otro yo". (Mayan Saying) You are my other self, If I love and respect you. I love and respect myself, If I harm you, I harm myself. You are my other self. Su amigo Mahdi aka Nino

Zacatecas. (Place where a river spill out upon overflowing) It was part of a state called Nueva Galicia, that is where their first people came to settle this state. Good for cattle raising and milk production; It has a prosperous poultry industry, good mining and very active commerce. Zacatecas is located in a central canyon of the Zacatecas' mountains range and enclosed by them. Its founding and the growth that followed have been tied to the extremely rich silver mines that are located in the surrounding area.

This Chiapas painting is from a Folkliroc colletion by Jaime Hidrogo, mexican painter from the state of Zacatecas. His work has been thoughout Mexico and Midle East. Copies of his paintings are available.

Chiapas is located at the south end of Mexico, bordered on the east by Guatemala, on the north by Tabasco, on the west by Veracruz and Oaxaca, and on the southeast by the Pacific Ocean. In Chiapas you can find all that nature has to offer: plentiful rivers, hills and volcanoes, and impenetrable jungles. It has hundreds of lakes and waterfalls, and exceptional flora and fauna. To the list of Chiapas' natural resources we have to add petroleum, since the state produces one third of all the crude oil that is extracted in Mexico. It also produces precious woods like the mahogany and the rosewood that are used to make high quality furniture, fine carvings, and the main musical instrument from Chiapas, the majestic marimba. On the marimba, two or more musicians play the most beautiful music, with the sounds of the woods, like "El Alcaraban", "El Jabali" and the well-known "Waltz Chiapas."

Veracruz: The conquistadores' registration documents show the name as Villa Rica de Veracruz. It is situated in the central portion of the Gulf of Mexico. On April 22, 1519 Cortez landed on the coast at San Juan de Ulua where now stands the Port of Veracruz, the most important port of Mexico, because of the trading with Europe and United States. Veracruz was visited by pirates during the colonial era. The music is vibrant and happy and reflects the influence of the Totonacas and Spaniards.

Thanks... gracias...

I welcome every day with love in my heart. I give thanks to God (Allah) for everything in my life. On this occasion I wish to thank my father for his encouragement in taking me to my first dance lessons, and my mother who, since the beginning, has accepted me with humility and supports me on my journey through life. I thank my brothers and sisters, who experience with me my triumphs and disappointments, my friends, who cheer me on to keep moving forward, and to my detractors, for their criticisms which have strengthened my resolve in the things that are important in my life. I give thanks to all my teachers who have formed such an important part of my life. Thanks also to my students, who with their dedication and determination have risen to the challenge of presenting the fruits of their labor, and to their families and friends who have supported them, bringing them to practices and shows. Finally, I thank all of you who join us in our shows, for having the confidence in us to dedicate your valuable time to us. I am sure you will be very contented, after witnessing what we offer with much pride and love - the product of so many months of sacrifice - the heritage of our ancestors, which is an active part of our lives and fills us with confidence and courage.

With love to you all,

Nino Carrillo

Excellent webpage! I'm impressed with the number of visitors that have
logged on already (609)! I'm going to be improving our group's web page
in the coming weeks. It was my first page and I was limited to space and
existing photos (better photos, counter and a guest book). I like the colors and information. I'm not of Mexican heritage but my wife is from Mexico. I performed in a Polish Folk Dance group for many years, took a break, and was requested to join my Sister-in-law's group: Beatriz Amberman's Hispanic Folk Ballet. I appreciate all heritages and Mexico is one of my children's heritages!! So that's important. Check out our webpage (1 month old) but always improving!!!

Hola Nino,

Finalmente! I found your page. Everything looks great. I wanted to express my gratitude for your dedication to our group. It seems like only yesterday that I couldn't perform a single dance. Now that I've done my first theater performance with Alma de Mexico, I know my decision to join your group was the right one!

Esperamos podernos ir a ver tu grupo. Yo trabajo en una aerolinea asi que no nos cuesta mucho irnos no mas tengo que ver si trabajo esa fin de semana. Bueno no le quito mas de tu tiempo. Que siga con el buen trabajo! Siga adelante! Hi Nino---

I was just visitor #140, what a lot of people for just 3 weeks, almost 6 a day!
I like your links, Nino, the Mariachi one and the Oaxaca one especially. I
was happy to read about music and dancing. In the Smithsonian magazine a
couple years back they had a huge long article on square dancing and in the
National Geographic they had a beautiful long one on the Indian Fancy
Dancers who go to all the powwows and compete. Anyway, I've wished for a
while that someone would come up with a big long reading thing about
Folkloric dance. Maybe you'll consider it.

Thanks --- see you later in the beautiful city of Oxnard. Nina
