Black-knobbed Sawback: (Graptemys nigrinoda)

Description: Males 3-4"; females 4-71/2". Carapace dark olive-brown; black-bordered, narrow-margined, circular or semicirular yellow or orange mark on each coastal and marginal scute. Plastron yellow, often with red tint; variable black branching pattern.
Breeding: Probably nests in July. Lays about 6 elliptical eggs, 11/2 " long, in nest 4" deep in sandbank.
Habitat: Sand- and clay-bottomed streams and rivers with moderate currents and many basking sites.
Range: Below the fall line in rivers of the mobile bay drainage, Alabama and Mississippi
Facts: Wary and hard to approach. It sleeps on logs and brush piles, and eats insects.
