Driver who hit J.D. could get 10 years in jail

SALEM - The man prosecutors say ran down and killed 13-year-old Joseph A. "J.D." Daniels a year ago was indicted yesterday by an Essex County grand jury.

Orlando Fuentes, 25, 38 Larchwood Road, Methuen, stands charged with leaving the scene after causing person injury that resulted in death.

He faces a minium of one year up to 10 years in jail, if convicted as charged.

Authorities ay on Oct. 3, 1998, at about 9 p.m. in Methuen, Mr. Fuentes was driving a stolen car down Washington Street when he struck and killed the boy as he walked along the road.

Mr. Fuentes fled the scene adn for nearly a year police had no leads. Mr. Fuentes was arrested on Aug. 28 following an intense investigation spearheaded by State Trooper Paul Zipper. He is being held on $100,000 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned soon in Salem Superior Court.

Mr. Fuentes was also sentenced to 18 months in jail for violating his parole. The violation was a result of the arrest on Aug. 28th. Mr. Fuentes is currently serving this sentence in the Middleton House of Corrections.

As of yet, a trial date has not been set.
