Jack leaned back and stretched. He was getting too old for this. He rubbed his shoulder and flexed his fingers with a wince. Yup, definitely too old. He pushed back from the desk and stood. Enough with the reports already, he needed some coffee. He grabbed a mug of the desk top and started down for the break room.

He pushed the break room door open and groaned. Loud, raucous music blared from the little radio on the counter.

"Oh, for crying out loud."

He picked up the radio and started looking for the volume dial. Ok, no volume dial, somebody had snapped it off, just great. He turned the tuner and finally found a station with a little reasonable music. He set the little radio down and walked over to the coffee maker.

He poured himself a cup and leaned against the counter. The music on the radio slowed.

At the time,

It seemed like the right thing

Breaking up and going separate ways.

But now I find

I can't keep from wishin'

I was back with you and yesterday

Laughing and loving wild and free

No one else but you and me.

"Come here," Jack laughed grabbing Sarah, pulling her into his arms.

"Hey!" She gave him a playful push. "You getting fresh with me, flyboy?"

Jack gave her a rakish grin, "Would I do a thing like that?" He pulled her onto his lap.

"Right," she smiled.

It was a perfect afternoon. Not to hot, not to cold. The sun shining down on a clear afternoon. Hamburgers sizzling happily on the grill. The gentle plink of the ice melting in the iced tea. The smell of freshly mowed grass in the air. A lazy summer day at its finest.

Jack leaned down and kissed her tenderly. Sarah snuggled up against him contentedly.

Suddenly, the report of pistol shattered the stillness, and their lives.

I want to feel that way again

I want to touch you like I did back then

I want to hold you in my arms

Let a candle burn till dawn

Feel your breathe upon my skin

It was the best I'de ever been

Can't believe we let it end

I want to feel that way again.

Jack stopped at the doorway to the kitchen. Sarah stood at the sink, her back to him. "What did they want?" she asked, not even turning to look at him. She took a drag on her cigarette, and stared out the window into the back yard.

"I've been reactivated," he said, quietly. "They're sending me to the Creek Mountain facility in Colorado."

She nodded and took another drag on her cigarette. "When do you have to go?"

"Tomorrow." Jack glance down at the linoleum floor. "Sarah, I," he stopped. What could he say? What should he say? He just didn't know anymore.

"What Jack?" She stubbed the cigarette out and turned to face him. Tears glistened in her eyes. "You what?"

Jack looked away. "I have to go pack." He turned and headed back for the steps, cursing himself with each step.

Holding hands

Walking down a dirt road in the dark

And knowing everything was right

We would dance

Talk about tomorrow

Our lips would touch and set

The night on fire

Back then there was nothing we couldn't do

Believing that dreams come true

Jack stood in the hospital corridor his arms wrapped around Sarah, holding her. She was alright. The ache in his chest eased a bit. "You ok?"

Sarah nodded, confusion widening her eyes. "But you."

Jack gave her another quick squeeze. "It wasn't me. I'll explain later. I need you to go. I'll take care of this."

She opened her mouth to say something but just nodded. She knew him and his type of work well enough to know now was not the time to ask questions.

Suddenly, a gout of sparks exploded down the hallway. Sarah's eyes shown in the reflection. He could see the fear and confusion. "Jack."

"It will be ok."

He was cold, so very cold. The hard ground under his back felt as if it was leaching what little warmth he had left right out of his bone. Pain flared in his chest with each breath and a dull throb radiated from his leg. He felt someone beside him.

"Sarah?"

She slid in beside him. He could feel her warmth.

"So cold."

"I know. It's ok. Just go to sleep."

Everything was alright now. She was here and it was alright.

Daniel looked up from his bottle of beer. "So when do I get to meet your wife?"

Jack sighed and took a swig from his bottle. "Oh, probably never. When I came back from Abydos the first time, she'd already left."

Daniel looked back down at his bottle. "I'm sorry."

Jack gave the bottle twist sending the beer swirling round the bottom of it. "Yeah, so was I. But I guess saying it didn't change anything." He took a drag on the bottle and looked back at Daniel. "I think in her heart she forgave me for that happened to our kid. She just wasn't able to forget."

Daniel studied him. "And what about you?"

Jack leaned back in his chair. "Me, I'm the opposite. I'll never forgive myself," he said saluting Daniel with the bottle, "But sometimes, I can forget."

Jack heard a stifled sneeze and the break door opened. He looked up from this cup and Daniel Jackson walked in.

"Hi, Jack. You still here?" the younger man asked. Jack raised his eyebrows and smiled. Daniel looked at him for a moment and then smiled sheepishly. "I guess you are if your standing there."

"No, this is my evil twin," Jack quipped.

Daniel gave him a blank look. Jack laughed. "I'm teasing, Daniel."

"Oh," Daniel nodded and headed for the coffee maker.

"How many of those have you had?" Jack asked.

Daniel looked up from the pot. "I don't know. I lost count a couple of hours ago." He smiled and filled the cup. He took a sip and grimaced. "Ugh, this is worse than you coffee."

"Hey!" Jack said, defensively. "There is nothing wrong with my coffee."

"Nothing, except I've seen kindergardeners stronger that it."

"Hey, I've seen some pretty tough kindergardeners."

Daniel narrowed his eyes studying him. "You ok, Jack?"

Jack sighed. "I'm ok." He nodded toward the door. "Let's go."

They started out the door and Jack turned back looking at the little radio playing away on the counter.

Daniel stopped and turned. "Forget something, Jack?"

Jack shook his head. "Not the important things, Daniel. Not the important things."
