STA100 - Beginning Calligraphy
An overview of the history of writing showing the scripts, materials used and layouts in and out of Period. The class includes hands-on use of a writing instrument and practice on one Alphabet style. Instructors
STA101 - Beginning Illumination
A class which teaches beginners how to illuminate basic scrolls. Topics include choosing a style, basic layout, set up. Instructors
STA102 - Drolleries: Funny Illuminations
In this class the student learns about the drolleries or funny, little drawings seen in illuminated manuscripts. The history and attitude of drolleries are discussed and the students are taught about the techniques used in the construction of drolleries. Instructors
STA103 - Tool Making and Scroll Layout
This class covers the period calligraphy tool production and period manuscript layout techniques. The period production methods and uses for tools such as the quill pen and brushes. The use and progression of period manuscript layouts are also discussed. Instructors
STA104 - Different Illumination Styles Adapted to the SCA,
This class includes picking and adapting a border design to fit an event theme or individual's personality. How to do the layout and how to use miniatures, line endings and initials both major and minor. Instructors
STA105 - Islamic (Mid-Eastern) Scrolls
How to use calligraphy and illuminations to design a scroll for a Mid-Eastern persona or event. The alphabet used is one with Roman lettering with Islamic script styles and forms. Instructors
STA106 - How to Design a Celtic Scroll
This class explains how to use xeroxed sources found in coloring books, etc., and a light table to draw the Celtic style, how to choose a color palette from original manuscripts such as The Book of Kells, Book of Durrow and the Book of Lindisfarne. Instructors
STA107 - How to Create a Kingdom Scroll Template
In this class the student will learn how to create a template through use of a paste-up technique which reproduces well. Topics covered include researching for the design of the scroll, gathering materials, preparations, putting the template together and safeguarding the template. Instructors
STA108 - Littera Bastarda Calligraphy
Hands-on Scriptorium dealing with a very general bastarda hand, with some discussion about period materials, the methods used to embellish and illuminate this hand, and the very special treatment of the ascenders and descenders which bastarda requires. Students should be familiar with calligraphic pens and have already obtained some degree of competence with another hand. Instructors
STA109 - Diapering
In this class students will learn about diapering, a method of adding a pattern to a large area of color without altering the color of the area. An overview of the history, technique and some examples are given. Students are given the opportunity to learn through "hands on" experience. Instructors
STA110 - "So You Want to Be a Scribe?"
A discussion of scroll layouts, basic scripts, heraldic designs for scribes. Ideas on theme scrolls for events, information on doing kingdom scrolls and information on supplies used for scribal arts are given. Instructors
STA111 - Late Period Calligraphy
A class which covers calligraphy during the latter part of the SCA period and through the Renaissance. A concentration on the "Italic" hand. Topics include technique, pen, ink, and paper considerations. Instructors
STA112 - Pen Manipulation (Intermediate)
A class where students learn how to twist and turn the pen to get certain effects in various styles. How to analyze pen strokes to figure out how they were achieved. Concentration on Gothic, Celtic in various forms and Roman Rustic. The class includes diagrams and samples of different scripts. Instructors
STA113 - Alternative Gilding Techniques
In this class students learn gilding techniques that do not require the use of real gold. Alternative materials such as sumi gold, two kinds of gauche, powder metallic gold and gold foil are presented. How each are applied and how they compare to each other concerning cost and availability are discussed. Instructors
STA114 - Practicum on Carolingian Calligraphy
An introduction to basic Carolingian calligraphy, history and techniques. The class will focus on Carolingian miniscule and instruction on writing in Carolingian miniscule. Instructors
STA115 - Period Colors for SCA Scrolls
This class discusses the various colors used in the painting of Kingdom scrolls. An overview of the colorwheel, how to mix colors, highlighting and shading are given. A discussion of types of paints appropriate for painting scrolls and care of materials are also given. Instructors
STA116 - Scroll Documentation
Basic instruction on how to document scrolls made from period designs. Instructors
STA117 - Pigments
This course is a lecture on the history and use of pigments in period. Items included in the discussion are which pigments were preferred, which were not used and which were used as substitutions for certain effects. Methods for preparation of pigments are also covered. Also listed as SCI901.Instructors
STA118 - Scroll Templates
A course covering how to create a template through use of paste-up techniques. Topics covered include researching for the design of the scroll, gathering materials, and work preparation. Further instruction is given on how to put it all together and safeguarding the template once finished. Instructors
STA200 - Basic Linoleum Block Printing
The purpose of this class is to give simple, step by step instruction on how to make a linoleum print with a single colored image. A brief history and comparisons between printmaking and relief printing are given. A discussion of tools and materials is also given. Instructors
STA201 - Color Linoleum Block Printing
A continuation of Basic Linoleum Block Printing. In this class the student will learn the process of making a multi-colored print using a different block for each color. Instructors
STA300 - Basic Embroidery
Discussion of couched thread in period, including Bayeux Tapestry and later period gold thread work. There may be a small fee for this class if the instructor provides materials. Instructors
STA301 - Intro to Tablet Weaving
A hands on workshop where students are instructed in the use of cards and yarn and how to read patterns. The goal of the class is to have the students able to weave a small piece of work by the end of class. Instructors
STA302 - Period Dyes
A class on mordants and their uses and their effect on dyes. A demonstration of simple dyeing techniques using common natural dyes and discussions of the differences between period commercial and common dyes, old and new-world dyes in late period and acceptable substitutions for SCA use, and the economics of dyeing will also be conducted. STA303 - Blackwork Embroidery
During this class the students will learn about the history of blackwork embroidery, how to make the stitch, and learn about the patterns used. Instructors
STA304 - Norman Embroidery
A quick overview of the stitches used in the Bayeux Tapestry and a hands on workshop. A review of the stem or outline stitch and the couched stitch are given as well as a brief history of the actual tapestry. A hands on workshop using cotton floss on cotton fabric is conducted. Instructors
STA305 - Middle Eastern Embroidery
A brief overview of the uses of embroidery in the Middle Eastern cultures including instruction on the various stitches such as cretan, aarba, open chain, etc. The class also includes a discussion on the applications to costume. Instructors
STA306 - Inkle Weaving
A class which discusses the history of inkle weaving and loom construction. How the end product compares to period weaving techniques such as card or tablet weaving. Instructors
STA307 - Introduction to Spinning
This class will cover how to select a good drop spindle, how to choose wool and other fibers for spinning, period sheep breeds, the type of equipment available during period and spinning folklore in Medieval Europe. Instructors
STA308 - Bead Weaving
A brief, hands on class on beadweaving which includes history and techniques. Instructors
STA309 - Basic Smocking
A beginners class covering a short history including Bliaut, Germanic and Flemish. Also covered are the basic methods, techniques and materials. Instructors
STA310 - Lucet: Decorative Knotted Cord
Instruction in making decorative cord using a traditional tool. Production of traditional box cord and diamond cord from multi-ply yarn and three basic patterns are also discussed. Description and instruction on how to use the techniques learned to make frog closures and other items are given. Instructors

A one hour class with instruction and practice on Split Stitch, Chain Stitch and Stem Stitch. Instructors

A one hour class with instruction and practice on The Running Stitch, Double Running Stitch, Cross Stitch, Long Arm Stitch and Back Stitch. Instructors

A one hour class with instruction and practice on The Brick Stitch, Satin Stitch and Algerian Eyelet Stitches. Instructors

Students should be comfortable with basic embroidery stitches before taking this class. The class provides instruction and practice on eyelet holes and Algerian Eyelets. Instructors
STA318 - Needlelace III
Students should be comfortable with basic embroidery stitches before taking this class. The class provides instruction and practice on the Ceylon Stitch and the Hollie Stitch. Instructors
STA319 - Needlelace I

STA321 - Embroidery - Opus Anglicanum
Students must have taken Beginning Embroidery I and II or be very comfortable with the split and convent stitches. In this class students will use the Split Stitch and learn Underside Couching. Instructors

Students must have taken Beginning Embroidery I or II or be comfortable with several stitches. The class provides instruction and practice on Couching and Pekinese stitch. Instructors

STA327 - Cartridge Pleating for the Novice:
A short history and hands on class that teaches an easy way to do cartridge pleating. The method utilized checkered fabric as a backing to cartridge pleat a skirt into a waistband. Instructors
STA328 - Goldwork Embroidery
This is an embroidery classes that provides instruction, practice for the student to learn couching, underside couching, and working with bullion. Materials are provided. Instructors
STA329 - Understanding Medieval Weave Structures
This class is geared toward the beginning weaver or non-weaver. It provides an explanation of weave structures from plain weave through several twill variations; possibly others as time permits. Fiber choices, weaving terminology and yarn sizes will be discussed. Instructors
STA330 - Evolution of Weaving Technology
A discussion of the evolution of weaving technology and its effect on the manufacture and structure of cloth in the Middle Ages. An explanations of warp weighted looms, horizontal looms, rigid heddle looms, counter balance looms and draw looms are provided. Instructors
STA400 - Byzantine Chess Boards
A class giving a description of woodmaking techniques using the example of Byzantine chess boards. Types of wood, tools and other materials are discussed. Instructors
STA500 - Leatherworking
A beginners class for leatherworking. A discussion of the types of leather, thickness and pliability and various preparations (wet verses dry). Instruction on how to transfer a design using tools instead of pencil or pen is also given. Instruction regarding the various types of tools and their care as well as how to finish the final product are also provided. Instructors
STA501 - Leatherwaxing
A practicum providing hands on instruction on how to harden leather plates and scales through waxing. Techniques on the process and a discussion of safety are included in the class. Instructors
STA600 - Basic Glass Bead Making
Students will learn the basic history of making and use of glass beads during period. Instruction and demonstration will be given on the safe use of tools and materials, the various techniques involved in the making of glass beads. Instructors
STA601 - Introduction to Chainmail Jewelry
This class covers how to manufacture chainmail jewelry, what tools are necessary and which are helpful, the three basic chainmail patterns, rectangles, lines, and triangles, what and where to get other necessary pieces such as earring loops and beads, problems to avoid and how to take measurements for women's coifs and earrings. STA900 - Silhouette of Fashion
A survey of clothing styles from 1000-1600AD. This class will concentrate on the look of the periods - whether clothes were loose or tight, exaggerated or simple and types of fabrics used. It will not cover specifics of each costume type but will look at the general silhouette of the period and how that was achieved, i.e. corseting or 16 yards of material. Instructors
STA901 - Basic Costuming
Introduction to creating basic medieval costumes including the "A" and "T" tunics as well as constructing and adapting modern patterns for medieval clothing. Instructors
STA902 - Duct Tape Pattern Making
How to turn a high necked, long sleeved, form fitting T-shirt and a roll of duct tape into any pattern. Techniques such as marking and cutting, grain lines, adding seam allowances, etc. are discussed. Instructors
STA903 - Headpieces Through the Middle Ages
This class details the style of headpieces for men and women from approximately 900 through 1600. Changing and developing styles as well as construction are discussed. Instructors
STA904 - Survey of Italian Costuming
This course is an overview of men's and women's clothing in the Italian Peninsula during the Quattrocento. Emphasis is placed on cut, fabric, design, patterns and evolution of style. Instructors
STA905 - Simple, Late Gothic Hat Making
Students will learn how to make a simplified version of a late period hat. Techniques on how to cut and sew the fabric, do needlework, and attach juliets and pearls are also discussed. Instructors
STA906 - Survey of Italian Renaissance Women's Fashion
A brief lecture with illustrations on Italian Renaissance costume showing similarities from 1300's - mid 1500's. Emphasis is placed on the cut of the bodice, attaching sleeves, pleating vs. gathering and using period portraits as research material for ideas in costuming for the SCA. Instructors
STA907 - Middle Eastern Costume
An overview of the most common costumes worn by women in period. Taught by nationality. Instructors
STA908 - Tudor Clothing
An overview of Tudor and Elizabethan clothing that includes a brief history of principle individuals during the period such as Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Silhouettes of the fashion during their reigns, changes in those silhouettes and their influence on public fashion are discussed. Instructors
STA909 - Anglo-Saxon Costuming
This class offers an in-depth look at the early clothing styles of
Anglo-Saxon men and women from the 5th and 6th centuries. Emphasis is on cut of clothing, fabric choices, construction techniques, ornamentation styles and accessories, as well as regional variations. Instructors
STA910 - Dags in Costuming
An overview of the history and use of dags in the costuming prevalent during the Middle Ages. Description of some of the different shapes of dags will be given as well as instructions on how to properly utilize dags in SCA costuming. Instructors
