Matchbook covers were taken for granted, thrown away and almost ignored as a true collectable. Though snifters full of matchbooks are still in living rooms across America, most people have not considered their collection as a serious hobby. But over the years, a cherished few people recognized the beauty of commercial art. A thread of collectors through several generations have been carefully preserving matchbook covers. More main-line hobbies such as stamp and coin collectors have enjoyed a more sophisticated reputation over the years, but that is changing. While those hobbies capture history, matchcovers capture "today". And a large collection creates a mosaic cardboard quilt of America's resolve through war and peace, poverty and prosperity. Today, the hobby has experienced a re-birth. As the stigma of smoking scares away advertisers, and since the invention of the disposable lighter, quality matchcover art has been on the wain. The nearly infinate array of styles and topics make the hobby attractive to all age groups and social strata. And you can still build a collection for free!
Collections can be local or national. Matchcovers can capture the history of a town, county, region, state or country. A good matchcover collection contains what stamps, postcards and coins cannot accomplish. A clever kitschy, commercial jingle that covers eighty -some years of American progress.
As time permits, I will be adding to this page so please bookmark me and check back often. If you're new to matchcover collecting, I've designed a "road trip" to exhibit and teach. Join me on a road trip through this century illustrated by matchbook covers!
More advanced collectors will appreciate my "Rare Covers" section. Thanks you for visiting!
