HebAlpha

Learn the Hebraic alphabet with HebAlpha

HebAlpha is a freeware designed to help English, French, and German people learn Hebraic characters.

Lessons

First, you choose a transcription's system.

Then you start a lesson.
Every character is displayed, along with its Roman name or its pronunciation.

Three styles of letters are presented: Block print, Cursive, and Rashi, e.g. here is the cursive form of the letter He.

Questions

When you think you know the lesson, you can pass a little exam, composed of a set of ten questions.
Every question consists of selecting the correct roman transcription of an Hebraic character, by clicking on one of the proposed answers in the lower half of the screen.
Here is another kind of question, where you are asked to find the right Hebraic character.

At the end of the test, a screen summarizes your answers.
The size of each bar is proportional to the time it takes you to give the correct solution, so that you can immediately spot what caused you troubles.
Below, are displayed the total time, the number of good answers at your first try, and a global evaluation in red, that lets you appreciate if you performed badly (less than 50), well (50 to 75), or very well (above 75).

Words

100 international words have been selected to illustrate the alphabet.

Revisions

- January 2004, a few errors about the alphabet have been detected by Cheryl.
- May 2004, the list of words has been corrected because of errors found by Oyd.
- August 2005, the list of characters has been revised and a new transcription for the German language has been added, following the suggestions of Ilja.

Computer requirements

- HebAlpha is a 16-bit Windows application.
It runs on a PC having Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT 3.5, 4.5, 2000, or XP.
- There is no version for Macintosh, or Linux, but maybe with a Windows emulator, it'll work.
- HebAlpha was originally designed for video screens having 640*480 pixels and 256 colors. It supports well other screen's resolutions, because the application's window can be resized.
- There is no sound.
- No special font file is required, because there is a font included in the package.
- The total amount of disk space used is about 700 KB.

Download

HebAlpha is free. You can download it by clicking on the link below.

Installation

* The package is a PKZipped archive. Therefore you first need to unzip it.

The list of files composing HebAlpha is:

HEBALPHA.EXE : main windows program,
HEBALPH.F00 : font file (special format),
HEBALPH1.DAT, HEBALPH2.DAT : files containing list of words,
HEBALP01.PCX, HEBALP02.PCX, ..., HEBALP16.PCX : sixteen little pictures.

Uninstallation

* Delete the files listed above.
* Delete also the file HEBALPHA.INI in the Windows directory. This file is automatically created by the software when it is run for the first time. It contains the size of the windows, the colors, the language English or French, etc. N.B. It is not a big deal if you forget to delete that file, because it is very small, and it contains only some data, no program.
* That's all. Hebalpha does not touch the registry, does not create hidden files, viruses, adware, or any other unpleasant things.
