The Order & Value: All & None
The Titles: The Rosy Cross, ROTA, The Wheel, The Cube in the Circle, The Circle Squared

The Circle Squared is the perhaps the most significant symbol of the Mysteries, so much so that we can offer but a brief overview here.

The cross within or on top of a circle is a pandemic symbol which has been important to nearly every culture and society in human history. The following are but a few of the more well known examples of its occurence.

There is the Egyptian Ankh, with a double meaning of both a Mirror and Life Eternal, comprised of an Oval or Circle over the Tau Cross often attributed to a sandal strap, thus the act of going, a divine attribute of the Gods. There are the Chaldean Astrological symbols for Venus and Mercury (virtually identical to the Ankh as a circle of Spirit surmounting the cross of matter), and most especially of Earth as a circle surrounding a cross. The Astrological chart which is used to plot a horoscope is yet another cogent image with the glyph of the Circle Squared, especially when we consider the alchemical/kabbalistic Cube of Space. The Phoenicians later incorporated all of the Chaldean Astrological symbols into the form of the Fylfot Cross or Swastica (a sacred symbol vilified by Hitler), its bent arms indicating a spinning motion, i.e. rotation. Accordingly, there is the ROTA (note the Latin Root of the word "rotate") of the Rosicrucians. Even more ancient is the Jaina Cross of the Eastern Mystic Hindu, another Swastica within a Circle, which was also the symbol of the whirling force of Thor's Hammer to the Teutonic Vikings. There is the Hermetic Caduceus, a staff with a pair of wings for the cross-bar, surmounted by a Sphere or Circle with one or two Serpents entwined around it. The Caduceus is also the symbol for medicine or healing, a cogent metaphor with the Biblical Tau Cross and Brass Serpent of Moses, which was raised in the desert to heal his people from the bites of the Seraphim. Reflective of the healing theme, there are the so-called Medicine Wheels of the Native Americans, piles of stones arranged as a Circle with a four-armed Cross. Then we find the mysterious Neolithic constructions, such Stonehenge, with monolithic stones arranged in a Circle and aligned with the Cross of the four cardinal directions, which have been demonstrated to be astronomical computers. The same region produced the Celtic Cross, often depicted in stone with Serpents entwined upon it. Last but not least, there is the Cross of Calvary, upon which Jesus was crucified, His circular and serpentine Crown of Thorns expressed as the Circle of the thorny Rose of the Rosicrucian's Rosy Cross.

In all of these the meanings might vary somewhat, but the commonalities are abundant, for the Circle Squared in and of itself signifies the very essence of our perception. The basis of art and architecture are defined by the symbol. Time is measured and read with this simple symbol as a clock, with no real need for numerals. The symbol as a compass allows us to discern position and direction. It describes the rudimentary polarities of masculine and feminine, of space and time. Each Arabic numeral and letter of the English Alphabet can be described by it.

Truly there is no more important symbol to mankind, as the student will discover with a minimum of comtemplation. As the symbol of the Rosy Cross, the Circle Squared is the most important Key, for it embodies the entirety of the Hebrew Qabala and of our English Cabala, as depicted in our English Rose below, adapted freely from the Rosy Cross of the Golden Dawn where each petal signifies one of the 22 Hebrew letters. This image might also grace the back of each of the New Symbols of our English Cabala, just as the traditional Rosy Cross is found as tarotee' on the back of each Atu of Crowley's Book of Thoth, pictured above. The reason behind our positioning of the four extra petals, WYXZ, might become readily apparent when figures 'A' and 'B' below are meditated upon.

The Hebrew letter attribute for the Circle Squared is Tzaddi/final, valued at 900, and the Astrological assignment is the Elemental Tattwa of Spirit, Akasha, positioned over the Alchemical Element of Earth. As it is written in our threefold Book of Law: "Tzaddi is not the Star.", for Tzaddi final signifies the Cube in the Circle, the Circle Squared, the ROTA, and the English Rose in The English Cabala - 111. [AUM = The Cube in the Circle]

The three Mother letters of the Hebrew Alphabet, Aleph, Mem, and Shin, are attributed to the Spiritual roots of Air, Water, and Fire respectively. The corresponding English letters of The English Cabala - 111 form the transcendant mantra AUM, which is found numerous times in the threefold Book of Law. In the 1=A=0 Cipher, AUM = 32, the number of Paths of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. These three letters in the center of the English Rose correspond neatly with the symbol of the Cube in the Circle, with each visible face bearing the alchemical signs of Mercury for Air, Sulphur for Fire, and Salt for Water. This very old mediaeval symbol was later adopted by the Builders of the Adytum as their seal, with the letters ROTA exchanged for BOTA. Note that the letter X, the Root of the Powers of Air, is aligned with Mercury, the Letter U, Root of the Powers of Fire, is aligned with Sulphur, and the letter Y, Root of the Powers of Water, is aligned with Salt. The Admixture of these three yield the letter Z, Root of the fourfold Powers of Earth.
