Description of Katy
This is Katy a five inch gauge coal fired model of the type of locomotive that worked in the Dinorwic slate quarries in North Wales. The model was constructed over a period of five years from drawings by the late Don Young, all machining being carried out in the home workshop. The only castings used were the cylinders and covers everything else being fabricated from materials to hand. The boiler is constructed from Copper and is silver soldered throughout and runs at 90psi.The locomotive weighs in at over 200pounds,is 30 inches long over buffer beams,14 inches wide and 23 inches high. Katy steams and runs very well and handles a good load. Most of the pictures in the model page were taken at the track of the Leicester Society of Model Engineers. The background pictures are the slate quarries at Llanberis North Wales where the little Hunslets worked.
