Dakota's Rescue Page
Dakota's Rescue
Page
Hi, my name is Dakota and I was once a
rescue pup. I'm one of the lucky ones though, I found a
home when I
was very young with people who love me and will keep me forever. Not
all dogs are that lucky. Every year thousands of dogs are put to
death because they don't have homes. Others die painful deaths while
wandering loose in cities and towns. I want to help as many dogs find
homes as possible so my page is dedicated to helping people find
rescue organizations and good shelters.

Dakota's Story
I was born in a trailer park in upstate New
York with my 7 other brothers and sisters. The people who owned my
doggy mom and dad thought it would be a good idea to intentionally
breed my mom ( a Sheltie mix) and my dad (a purebred Australian
Shepherd). Pretty dum, huh? A representative from Australian Shepherd
rescue found out about us and she convinced my doggy mom's owner to
give up those of us pups who were left. We went to CAPP (Companion
Animal Placement Program) and they helped us to find
homes.
One Saturday in June I was taken to an
adoption day at a pet store, it was my lucky day. That's where I met
my human mom. I was 3 months old at the time. She came and picked me
up and we both knew it was love at first sight. I curled right up
against her chest and she said she would adopt me. Boy was I glad. My
mom thought I was so great that she decided to help other Aussies, so
she's now a rep for ARPH(Aussie Rescue). I'm so proud of
her.
I've been here ever since with my kitty cat
brother and sister. I wonder what happened to my brothers and
sisters. I hope they were as lucky as me, but the odds say they
weren't. More than half of the dogs adopted as puppies don't spend
their life with one owner. Isn't that sad?
This is my little sister Cheyenne, she's a
rescue too. She's a purebred Australian Shepherd. She was found on
the rifle range at Fort Drum Army Base in New York. She was only 4
months old then. Mom thinks someone dumped her there. She came to our
house as a foster and never left. Cheyenne is a little bratty at
times, but we all love her anyway.

Why Adopt a Rescue
Dog
You're probably thinking why should I adopt
a rescue dog, they're older and not as cute as puppies. There are
some very good reasons.
House training - anyone who has ever owned
a puppy knows the joy of house training. Even if you get a puppy that
trains quickly there will still be accidents. Think of that beautiful
carpet you own, it may not be beautiful for long. When training a
puppy it also means lots of trips outside, so much for relaxing and
watching the TV.
Chewing - All puppies chew, there's no way
around that. An older dog is far less likely to exhibit this
behavior.
What you see is what you get - When you
adopt an older dog you know what you're getting. There will be no
surprises about the size or appearance. The dog's personality is also
set. If you adopt from a rescue the dog's foster home can give you
all kinds of valuable info that helps you choose a dog that's right
for you.
Super lovable - Most dogs that have been
mistreated become super loyal pets. A dog that has spent its life on
a chain outside or worse will be very loyal to the person who shows
it the good life.
A super good feeling - Only a rescue dog
can give you that great feeling from knowing you helped save a
life.
If you feel you still want a puppy and are
going to buy one, then please don't buy from a pet store. If you do
you are supporting puppy mills and getting a dog that is likely to
have major health problems. Did you know that the average pet store
pays $45 -$75 for a puppy? Doesn't it make you wonder why you pay so
much for that doggy in the window?

I hope these links will be very helpful to
you in finding your new best friend. Take a look around my site and
