Jessica Walters: part time superhero and part time lawyer. In between those two gigs Jessica is living the high life. She’s truly living the high life. She parks where she wants, sleeps with who she wants and well...she partys a lot. A REAL LOT. In fact, she abuses her privileges and self so much that the Avengers kick her out of the mansion. Not off the team, just out of their house! And, to top it off, she gets fired from her law gig.
Must have had something to do with crushing a color copier when she was taking pictures of her butt(I LOVE that joke!).
Just when things look bleakest, she gets hired by the law firm of Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway. They specialize in “Superhuman Law”.That means they defend superheroes and supervillians.
Yeah, it’s a pretty weird concept. But funny. hey-how many places have the Mad Thinker’s android working there as a gopher?
On her first case, where a “Danger Man” wants to sue Roxxon for making him “stronger”, she ventures into the firm’s research library and is sent to the “long boxes”. Yep: comics. See, Marvel Comics are admissible in a court ofd law because(check this out) any comic published before 2002 bears the CCA seal and that Federal Agency makes them a LEGAL DOCUMENT!
The series is loaded with a veritable who’s who in the Marvel Universe. From the big guns like Spider Man and The Thing to B and C list heroes and villains like John Jameson and The Scorpion. One of the best bits occurs in issue #4 as Spider Man sue the Bugle for defamation of character. Spidey, while on the witness stand, says he thinks Jameson has it out for him because he’s black(Yeah-I told you the book was out there). When all is said and done, Peter Parker has to take the stand and testify. The outcome, a public apology from Parker and Jameson in chicken suits(“Bugle clucks up big time” is actually one of the lines!).
From outer space boxing matches to drinking games with Hercules to the true origin of Titania and the death and resurrection of She Hulk, this series managed to tread the realm of mix action, romance and satire in a nice little, lightweight package. No BIG reveals. No Universe altering stories. Just a nice little fun book which was steeped in Marvel Comics tradition. It’s truly a shame this one didn’t catch on because it had true potential and just not as rabid a readership as SPIDER GIRL which has been saved from cancellation more times than I can count.
Look this one up in your local comics back issue bin. You should be able to find it for cover price or less.
And it certainly is worth every penny.
