SPIDER-GIRL-A REVIEW

SPIDER-GIRL LEADS THE WAY IN M2 UNIVERSE

by Eric Anctil

This is my first attempt at writing a review, so please bear with me.

I was a huge Spiderman fan as a kid. I loved it when he was in high school. I think I was drawn to the idea of a teenager trying to cope with suddenly acquiring all these powers. There is an analogy to all teens trying to cope with their suddenly new and larger body, their hormones, girls, etc. I also liked Peter Parker’s struggle with the responsibility; again like all of us struggling to grow up.

As he became an adult, I lost interest. I think it was because I was too young to relate to all those grown up problems. Then as I became an adult, I wished for the comics as an escape back to childhood, not a continuation of what I was living through anyway.

Now, suddenly, here is Spidergirl. A teenager, adolescent, growing pains like no one else. It has the 90’s twist of being very oriented toward her relationship with her parents. In Peter’s era, Aunt May would give him a glass of warm milk in a Leave it Beaver kind of warm fuzzy home feeling. Now here is May arguing with her parents over what to do with her powers. It’s great? It raises a million questions, like:

  • How can her father tell her not to do what he did? (Kind of like the whole “Say no to drugs thing”.)
  • How does a female cope with all these powers and be cool at school? (She is much more in the popular crowd than Peter ever was.)
  • What happened to Peter anyway; the leg, why’d he quit being Spidey , the police force??!? And on, and on, and on.

All in all, I can’t wait for next month, and every one after that to see what the hell is going to happen.

    I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!

By the way, I am Joe's cousin Eric, the long lost and recently reunited (much to my, and our, enjoyment) one. I have read all that he has written about me in this publication these last few months, and figured that I should come onto his turf, to help illustrate how brilliant he is in his field, writing, by demonstrating how unadvanced my writing skills are in comparison to his. Honestly, I almost don't recognize this Eric character he keeps talking about. But if I was half the man he is, well I'd be his cousin or something ( oh yeah, I am - - - I guess there's hope after all. So I'll close with my rendition: Keep on reaching, striving, climbing that mountain of life, and enjoy the journey, pitfalls and all .
