SkyWritings October 1999 Northern India Cuisine Comes to Jamaica
Anil Sud, his wife Rajni, and their partner, Rajiv Bhatnagar, have teamed and launched "Passage to India" in Ocho Rios, featuring superb Northern Indian cuisine graciously served by attentive waiters. Pampering the clientele comes naturally to Rajni who spent several years with Singapore Airlines, world-renown for pampering its passengers. Not that the men are any slouches in the hospitality department -- Anil is the general manager at Braco Grand Lido and Rajiv is resident manager at Sans Souci Grand Lido. Passage to India has opted for cuisine that has a heritage harking back to the Moguls who invaded India from Persia in the sixteenth century. To ensure the authenticity of its dishes the restaurant makes its own spices and yoghurt from natural ingredients and has brought two top-class chefs from the State of Punjab. Other Indian specialties include kebabs and tandoor to maintain the integrity of the menu. You can have your food prepared mild, medium or hot according to your preference. It's hard to pick your preference from the restaurant's two dozen main dishes created with chicken, mutton or seafood. A wide vegetarian selection, a traditional Moghlai biryanis, nan bread and kuchumber salad are essential accompaniments. Passage to India has cleverly exploited its rooftop location in the Soni Plaza off Main Street in Ocho Rios and at night in particular, its cool breezes, subtly-muted colours and attractive hanging lamps provide a setting that undeniably enhances your meal. Open every day of the week for 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the restaurant takes reservations at (876) 975-3182.
