Come See What Darby Borough is All About!

2003! A New Beginning for Darby Borough!

We have lots of good things happening in our Borough and hopefully they will come to fruition this year!

Darby has been in existance for over 320 years! And....some of us have ALMOST been around that long!

Darby is one of the few towns that seems to be everyone's "Hometown". No matter where you go, you can always run into someone who has either lived here, was born here, grew up here or even came back here!

We may have a rough and tumble reputation, but we also have a dedicated compassionate reputation and we are proud to say that we are from Darby PA!

Read below and follow some of the links to find out what we are all about!

On September 16th, 1999, Hurricane Floyd came and we kicked him right out of town!

On September 16th, 1999, The Borough of Darby was almost destroyed.......almost that is. Hurricane Floyd came and damaged 337 homes and 59 businesses. We had the most damage in the State of Pennsylvania. Our State of Emergency was finally lifted in May of 2000. We still have many families that cannot return to their homes.

DEMOLITION - BUY OUT
Over 85 homes were purchased in a Property Acquisition Project. These homes were extremely damaged and can no longer be occupied. In addition to this, we have lost this amount of good families that we will surely miss.

But in the face of this disaster, Darby Borough did what Darby Borough always does. It survives and comes back stronger. Right away we set up a Central Command Center to monitor and communicate with our residents.
Demolitionof the first phase of homes began on Monday, July 24th at 8:30 AM. the first homes to be demolished were 1219 and 1221 Chestnut Street. Following these homes were the 1400 block, the 1300 block, the 1200 block and finally 16 & 18 Creek Avenue. When this was completed, the 300 block of South 8th Street, and several on the 900 block of Springfield Road and one on Pine Street were the next ones to be demolished. This is a very sad part of our history but an extremely necessary part.

At the completion of the project, the area where the homes were will be an open space required by FEMA & PEMA. The area where the Chestnut Street homes were will be known as John Bartram Memorial Park after John Bartram, Botanist who was born in Darby and is buried here.

The Emergency Services Training Center located in Darby Township now has a Web Page! You can also register right on line for Safe Driving Classes, Track I, Track II, Outpatient Intervention or YDP Youth Alcohol Prevention Classes.

Under the direction of Walt Omlor, the mission of the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center is to train the Emergency Services of Delaware County so that they are prepared to do their job in any situation they are confronted with. Though the need for a training center had been recognized since the early 1970's, it wasn't until 1987 that this dream was realized by acquiring the property and building the ESTC. It took five years after that before classes could be held at the facility. From this humble beginnning, the training center has become one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind offering training in many fields such as Law Enforcement, Fire Departments, Emergency Medical. Ambulance Services, Disaster Planning and much more!

Darby Borough has had it's fair share of problems with the Railroad. Everyone said we couldn't do it but we did! We stood up and stated our case....however controversial it may have been. We discovered, that the problems affecting Darby Borough, affect communities nationwide. People from all over the United States have relayed similar stories of train derailments, train stoppages, hazardous gate crossings etc. The national attention that we drew by blocking the tracks, caused the Federal Railroad Administration and other agencies to inspect the tracks along entire East Coast. Over 60% of the tracks were found to be defective! Now, other communities are taking firm stands such as we did to ensure the safety of their residents.

Listed below are several links concerning the Railroad, Facts, and Safety.

We will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of our residents and all those who pass by our borough.
