Background

I am Peg Mauer, owner of Communication Link. My strong technical background is a result of 25 years at Eastman Kodak Company, including 14 years as a Technical Communication Specialist and 9 years as a Computer System Manager. I received a BA in English with a Writing Concentration and a Computer Science minor from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY.

Several graduate-level courses, including the USDA Basic Indexing course and many professional seminars and workshops have added to my professional growth.

I am a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and the former manager of the Indexing Special Interest Group (SIG) within STC. The goal of the Indexing SIG is to help technical communicators learn more about writing good indexes for their documentation.

The American Society of Indexers (ASI) is also important to my professional development; I have served as co-leader of the Western New York State chapter, and have served on the ASI Board of Directors. I have written stand-alone and embedded indexes for many computer-related manuals and high-tech product manuals. I also enjoy writing indexes for books about genealogy, biographies, NY State history, the Adirondack Mountains, and American history.

My presentations include:

  • Indexing Technical Documentation
  • Virtual Teams and Telecommuting
  • Embedded Indexing Techniques
  • How to Build Quality and Usability into Your Index (along with  Lori Lathrop and  Pilar Wyman )
  • Using Computers to Index Your Genealogical Writing
  • Indexing Old Family Letters
