The Serial Spider
The Spider - Classic Pose

The Spider's Web is one of Columbia's best movie serials. Directed by Ray Taylor and James W. Horne the chapterplay is surprisingly faithful to the character's magazine incarnation. One large difference is that they gave The Spider a webbed mask and cape, which purists may dislike. But the change works to the character's advantage; giving him a dramatic and distinctive image that was an improvement over his usual cover appearances which generally depicted him wearing just a black hat, cloak, and dime-store mask.
The serial is action-packed with
three death traps in the first chapter alone! The entire cast of the magazine was featured: Richard Wentworth/Blinky McQuade/The Spider, Nita Van Sloan, the faithful Ram Singh, Jackson, and Jenkyns the butler. Commissioner Kirkpatrick's name was shortened to Kirk for some reason, but this isn't too upsetting as Wentworth often called him Kirk in the novels. (In fact I've often wondered if this change was a simple mistake due of the frequency of the nickname in the magazine.)

Warren Hull was a great choice to play The Spider. Hull was a better actor than most who appeared in serials, and he actually looked like the interior drawing of Richard Wentworth in the magazine. (This is particularly true in The Spider's Web, by the 2nd serial his face was somewhat fuller.)
He had a great speaking voice, one of those clipped, slightly "upper-class" ways of speaking that gave the impression good schooling and a decisive mind. His
Blinky McQuade is great - he really looks and sounds like a different person.
