Bureau of Land Management

An agent of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) must have a genuine desire to protect and interact with the varied landforms of this country. Included in these duties are the research of the natural, nonliving aspects existing within protected lands (i.e. fossils, oil, minerals), monitor the use of these lands, and maintain a positive connection with the public regarding the lands they are assigned to protect.

Assignment:

Explore the resources below and others available to you concerning deserts and land management. Remember, you're creating both a written summation, to be turned into you teacher, and a multimedia presentation, to be presented to the rest of the class. Collect information needed to complete the Main Point, answer the Knowledge Questions and the Thought Question. For your written summation, write a paper doing each of the three assignments: Main Point, Knowledge Questions, and the Thought Question. Then, using Hyperstudio or Powerpoint, put that same information into a multimedia presentation. Try to incorporate new and exciting ideas into your multimedia presentation. Be creative, but remember, you will be graded on the quality of your work. Good luck!

Main Point:

Identify three points of interest that are protected and managed by the BLM. Describe them, collect pictures, and report on why they are important and protected.

Knowledge Questions:

- What year did the BLM begin?

- What change brought about it's conception?

- How many surface acres is the BLM responsible for?

- How many acres are protected in San Bernardino County (California)?

Thought Question:

Is the BLM a needed organization in state and federal governments? Is spending money on these organizations a wise idea? Develop an argument supporting or attacking the existence of the BLM at both the state and federal levels. Create alternatives or additions to the BLM that would accomplish the same goal, but possibly save on money.
