Meteorologist
The weather of a region is affected by several factors. Mountains, precipitation, and population are just a few aspects that can affect the weather of a certain region. In order to forcast the weather correctly, a meteorologist must understand all of these features and how they interact with the environment. Forcasting the weather is important not only for comfort, but it can also help save lives.
Assignment:
Explore the resources below and others available to you concerning meteorologists, weather, and desert features. Remember, you're creating both a written summation, to be turned into you teacher, and a multimedia presentation, to be presented to the rest of the class. Collect information needed to complete the Main Point, answer the Knowledge Questions and the Thought Question. For your written summation, write a paper doing each of the three assignments: Main Point, Knowledge Questions, and the Thought Question. Then, using Hyperstudio or Powerpoint, put that same information into a multimedia presentation. Try to incorporate new and exciting ideas into your multimedia presentation. Be creative, but remember, you will be graded on the quality of your work. Good luck!

Main Point:
Find three features or characteristics of a desert that affect its climate. Understand how and why the climate is affected by these features.
Knowledge Questions:
- What is an El Niño and what affect can it have on deserts in the SouthWestern United States?
- What is monsoonal moisture, how does it develop, and what affects does the phenomenon have on a desert?
- What are some of the strategies that plants and animals use to survive in the desert?
- How many deserts are there in the United States, what are they, and how are they defined?
- Name some of the weather features that a meteorologist in the desert might measure.
Thought Question
Describe desertification, what it is, what causes it, how it affects cultures, and it's current threat on society. Explain whether or not you feel this is an important issue for the Mojave desert region and explain what can be done to help protect against this phenomonon.
