Subject: Gaus Friedrich of Christian
Roger,
I am researching on my family from Seewald (Bergseite), also on
the general history of the Volga Germans. Recently I have been
into making research on the VG men who served in the Soviet Army
during the WW II. Many of them were summoned into the army before
the infamous Decree of August 28, 1941. Afterwards, from what
I understand, because of their official status as "the people´s
enemy" (because of their ethnicity) they were taken to either
concentration camps or deported to work in the Labour Army in
Siberia.
Now, because of me being proficient in Russian, I have been checking
Volga German men on a special website put up by the Russian Ministry
of Defence with documents regarding the military during the WW
II. I came across a name of a soldier from Fischer, too. Apparently,
his wife Pauline Gaus compiled a search warrant with a Russian
military office in the City of Novosibirsk in Siberia in late
May 1946 in order for them to start looking for him.
Details from the warrant:
Gaus Fedor Christianovich (= Friedrich des Christian),born 1914
in Fischer, Marxstadt, Saratov region, Republic of the Volga Germans.
Was called in for duty on March 27, 1941
Missing from March 1943
Last letter from him arrived on August 22, 1942 from the city
of Ulyanovsk, Kuybyshev region
Hope, this will be somehow of an interest to you.
Regards,
Tanja Schell

I am trying to trace my Great-Grandparents
back to Russia. They are from the Saratov/Samara areaand may be
from the village of Katharinenstadt. I have seen some census info
from this village fromthe 1760's or 80's and was hoping to find
out where to look for the census info from the mid to late1800's.
My Great grand father's name was Heinrich Hopfner and his wife's
name was Katharina Kildau ( or Kildaw, Kildov, or some other close
variant). Is there a way to find people thru the churches in the
Volga region as I have the name of the pastor that confirmed and
married them?
Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for further information
on my grandmothers grandparents. Peter Weinmeister b. 1851 and
his wife Elizabeth (Reichard) b. 1851 left Dietel (Liverpool England)
Nov. 1899 for Montreal, Quebec on the SS Laurentian with their
6 boys. The oldest of the boys (my grandmothers father) was John
Jacob Weinmeister b. 1878 and his wife of 10 months Christina
Elizabeth (Fuches) b. 1881. They all ended up homesteading in
the Rhein District of Sask. CAN by August of 1900.
I'd like to know when Peter and his family arrived to the Dietel
colony or whether he was born there. Also, what the 5 other boys
names were and what part of Germany they came from. I did find
one comment about a Weinmeister family from Anhalt, but not which
of the 4 Anhalt- regions.
Any information would be helpful.

My maternal grandmother Sophia nee
Tierbach came to Bellwood from Fischer in (I believe) 1910.
She came here with her cousin Christian Tierbach and his wife
whose name I believe was Pauline. My grandfather, Freiderich Justus,
arrived in Bellwood in 1910 or 1911. They married in 1912 and
resided in Bellwood their entire lives and raised six children
there.
I exchange letters with a second cousin (male) on a regular basis.
Maybe twice a year I hear from a third cousin (female). Both have
been in Germany since the '90s. He lives in Ratingen. I have been
told that in the 1800's some of my maternal relatives travelled
to South America because they were promised land there. Of course,
this didn't happen and they ended up in a jungle area. From the
time they left Russia until they were able to return it was a
total of two years.
I have learned a lot of info about my grandmother's relatives
but have not been able to find out anything about my grandfather's
relatives. The relatives in Germany do not seem to know anything
about the Justus family. I do know that my grandfather's mother's
maiden name was Meyer.
The name Tierbach (still spelled that way by my cousins) became
Thierbach once they came to America.

Hi,
I found your website quite by accident, and I think it is so great.
I have been stumped on my family tree. Maybe someone can help
me?
My great Grandpa was Christ Weinbender, and he married his first cousin, Mary "Maria" Bauer. 1920 census shows that they immigrated in 1913 from Russia.
Here is what I have so far. It seems so odd that if they were first cousins, why is it so difficult to find information on both lines?
Christ J. Weinbender (Christ Phillip Weinbender) born 27 Aug 1883 in Muller, Russia died 01 Jan 1924 and buried in Pueblo, Colorado.
Married Mary "Maria" Bauer, born 03 Jun 1888 in Volga, Russia, died 11 May 1963 in Sunnyside, Washington. Applied for citizenenship in 1913
Christ & Mary Weinbender
had two sons:
John George Weinbender born 15 Apr 1917 in Fort Morgan, Colorado,
USA, died 20 Apr 1978
Christ and Mary were first cousins - Mary's mom was Maria Katherina Weinbender who married a Heinrich Bauer. There were at least 4 Bauer brothers, two of which came to America. Mary and her sister Elisabeth Bauer also came to America at different times.
Thanks, Cindy

ancestry of my grandfather Frederick Baustian who I believe emigrated
to the U.S. around 1878 from the village of Fischer, Russia. He
was born around 1856 and died in Lost Springs, Kansas in 1929.
His wife at he time of his emigration was Elizabeth or Lizzie.
Her maiden name is not known. She was born around 1851 and died
in Niles, Kansas in 1891. Frederick and Elizabeth had one daughter
at the time of their emigation . Her name was also Elizabeth.
She was born in 1874. I was re- ferred to you by Rachel Smith

Are you related to the Toepfers that live in Hays, Kansas? I came to know Bill Toepfer quite well. He was the accountant for Ben Dreiling Motors of Hays for many years.

Hello Karen, I just saw your
posting on a Germans in Russia website. You replied to someone's
request for information on the name Herwald. Well, I just began
researching Andreas Schmidt and his wife Anna (nee Herwald) and
their children Alexander, Fredrick, and Anna. Andreas is my husband's

by the daughter-in-law of a child, David, they had once in the
states (Wisconsin at that time). She did not speak German so I
am afraid that some of the names, etc. are not fully accurate.
The town in Russia that she entions is Katriena but I cannot find
any mention of it so I am wondering if it is actually Katherinestadt.
But she does mention specifically that the family left Russia
for England and came to the US by was of Canada in April 1912.
I would love any additional information or links that you could
provide about the SS Dominion and the Philadelphia port. I have
not been able to locate manifest records for this family at Ellis

What a great site you have created!
I found nearly all the info I needed in 1 visit, and I've been
looking for nearly 10 years.
My name is Nancy Friebus Young, and I live in Placerville, CA.
My grandparents, Erich Friebus, and Beada (Thierbach) Friebus
lived in Fischer until about 1911 0r 12 , when they
emigrated to the US. They were members of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church, and probably married about 1908 or 9. They had 2 sons
who died in infancy from disease in Russia. A son, Erich and daughter
Katie Friebus Stowe were probably born in US about 1912 &
13. My father, David Friebus was born March 24, 1914 in Menominie
Michigan, so I'm thinking they may have landed in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, but have no info on their ship or departure date. They
soon moved to Bellwood, Illinois where Anna Friebus Richardson,
Sam, Robert and Lydia Marchese Friebus were born. ErichSr. had
a cement contracting business which laid the sidewalks in Bellwood,
and I remember seeing his name stamped into the cement on street
corners when I was a child.. They lived on 24th St. in Bellwood,
and the bathroom walls were murals of Fischer painted by Erich.
If anyone has info on their ship, departure date, or arrival date,
I would appreciate it. Nancy Young send to bluecrow@sbcglobal.net

( COLONY - GLARUS (Biberstein) November 19, 2002 From: Cindy Friese,
[message from 2002]
Looking for any information on the family of NIKOLAUS WAGNER from Glarus. He left for United State in 1913 and eventually settled in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I believe he had a brother named Peter, and his father was named Henry. Family lore has it he came to US on his brother's passport, and I'm not sure if this brother was Johannes Wagner, or if his real name was Johannes. Nikolaus was born on 7-17-1893, confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1907.
Cindy Friese, E-mail: - cindyfriese3@yahoo.com
February 20, 2005. NOTE: Following is an addition to the 2002 request -- can anyone help?
Since 2002, I have been researching
several family members that originate from the Volga River region
of German Russians. I posted the above note on this websites in
2002, but received no response at that time. Since the 2002 posting,
I have found some information in the Clues 1996 that may be relevant
to these family members. I do not know how to proceed. I have
ordered the Glarus census, Clues 1996 (1&2) and The Volga
Aid Society book from your the AHSGR organization so far. The
following data is what I gleaned from the documents
1. "clues 1996
WAGNER, Elisabeth, married to a Wagner. Daughter of Johannes.
One sister and one brother also went to America."
I believe my grandfather Nickolaus (sp?) Wagner (born on 7-17-1893)
left via Bremen with his brother Johannes papers. His ticket indicated
the name Johannes. I have found a Johannes Wagner arriving in
Baltimore from Glarus in 1913. Nickolaus also had a sister, Emelie
Wagner Kern (born 8-6-1888) that also left with her family, Levin,
and daughters Hermina and Emma one week prior. All were from Glarus.
Also on that manifest was a brother named Peter. I believe Peter
returned to Glarus and his family that lived there, at a later
date. Parents of Nickolaus and Emelie are believed to be Henry
and Marie. The clues did not give enough information to know if
this was the family they were asking about. I have more information
to share if this is relevant. Nickolaus was confirmed at Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Rosendamn (***see
note by webmeister). Nickolaus
went for a few years to Detroit, Michigan and later settled in
Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
(***Rosendamn is a daughter
colony, founded in 1849, Russian name is Marzovo).
2. "clues 1996
? LOTZ, Lydia (married Gottlieb ZELLER) and Emilie (married David
GRÄFENSTEIN) from Zürich, Volga Region. May have lived
in Chicago. Lydia and Gottlieb had children Gottfried, Lydia,
and Friedrich. Lydia died in 1925, and Gottlieb married a woman
from Katharinenstadt."
My cousin (another of Nickolaus's grandchildren) is Van Grafenstein,
whose grandfather was David Grafenstein from Zurich. David was
married to Emelie LUTZ also from the same region. My records show
that Emelie's father's name was Frederick. David's father's name
was Samuel. David and Emelie married on December 25, 1912 in Zurich,
Russia at Christ Hirchelman Eben Aiden Lutheran Church. The couple
emmigrated in 1914 and settled in Danube, Minnesota and later
Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
3. Through Ancestry.com I have come across reference to a book:
ERTEL, RONALD J. "Germans from Russia who Settled in Sheboygan,
Wisconsin, Area and Earned their Citizenship." pg. 40 that
mentions David and Emily Grafenstein and would like to know how
I can obtain that book. I do not see it listed on the AHSGR website.
4. How do I use the 1798 census of Glarus to help trace my ancestors?
There are two Wagner families listed and one Kern family.
I have tried to figure it all out myself and now I am stuck! Cindy Friese, E-mail:

After her husband died she moved to Windsor CO and there married Fred Schadt and later George Strohman. My e-mail address is j.masuka2@comcast.net. If this is the family you are searching I do have some information to share. Shirley Masuka
Colony - Schwed, Russia
My name is George Vanderpool
but my Maternal Grandfather was George Miller (Probably George
Mueller) My Grandmother's name was Anna (I think her maiden name
was Ninsteel) My Grandfather immigrated to the US in about 1911
(through Ellis Island I think) and my grandmother followed in
a little over a year but came through Nova Scotia. They settled
in Bellwood Illinois and lived in that part of the country until
their death. (Gramps 87 & Gram 94). I looked up the town names
of Fischer and Schwed because my Mothers sister married a "Hoppe"
and we were told that both Miller's (Mueller) and Hoppe's came
from that part of Russia. My Mom (Paulina) and my Uncle Samuel
were ages 3 &1 when my Grandma brought them to the us from
Russia (In about 1912 or 1913) If you have any record or information
on any of these people, I'd sure appreciate it if you would share
the info with me. If you have any questions about any of the above,
I'll try my best to answer them. (I have one aunt left who is
now 90 but is still in great health and sharp as a tack) THANKS!

Colony - Landau, Russia
Good Day, I am looking for information on a Frank Kuntz 1877 (Franz Kunz) Landau, Russia. I am looking for information that would show a connection to Franz's son Joseph Kunz (Kuntz) Born 10 Jul 1901 in Landau Russia. This family came to Canada in 1910. Joseph was the eldest son of Franz and Margaretha (Glauser): 1884 Kunz (Kuntz). Frank also had a brother who went to South America at around the same time. I do not know the name of the brother. Also Franz had a brother Innozenz and a sister named Monica (Monika). The sister could have been a cousin.
Regards,
Please contact Garrett Kuntz - email: garkun@shaw.ca
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
NOTE: From the Webmeister - I was not able to find a colony named Landau in settlements in Russia. There were 10 small Mennonite villages founded it the Terlyk Region, located north of Saratov in an area called [Kuybyshav (Old-Samara)]. In this Tarlyk region , there is a Mennonite Colony named Lindenau. The Mennonites that settled in this area were from Danzig - West Prussia, and there is a village in West Prussia named Landau, south of Danzig. The case could be made that these villages - Landau, Lindau and Lindenau - are all of the same origin, and the village in Russia (Lindenau =Landau) was named after the settlers home village in Prussia -ie: "Landau".

Colonies Fischer and Stahl
My grandfather's name was Frederich Justus. I have very little information regarding his background. I do know that he came from the Volga region in Russia to American in the early 1900's. He arrived prior to 1912 as a single man in his early to mid twenties. He married Sophia Thierbach (Tierbach) in Bellwood IL. I assume he came through Ellis Island but am not positive. I remember my grandparents talking about Fischer and Stahl and the Steppes. He is the only member of his family that came to America and my grandmother came here with a male cousin - Christian Thierbach. If there is any information you can direct me to in order to find information on their backgrounds I would be grateful From.CJVOKAC@aol.com

My greatgrandfther CARL MANWEILER (KARL MANNWEILER) and his wife, ANNA SCHMUNK came from Russia in the early 1900's. They landed in Canada (probably near the border) with their daughter Anna. A son Fred was born in Canada. Not known how long they were in Canada before coming to Illinois. They worked sugar beet farms in the Rochelle IL area. In 1911 I know they were in Nebraska in 1911 as that is where my father was born. They also lived in Montana and Colorado. Always worked in sugar beet fields but never owning their own farms. If anyone has any information on either of these surnames I would greatly appreciate it.

John Kurtz (father)-1849-1934, and his three sons - Johannes Kurtz

I do not know were they lived (may be in Fresno,California or

WOLFGANG who died in USSR.
FRIEDRICH ALTAG had three children: a daughter, MARTA, and two
sons, JOHANN and FRIEDRICH. He left Russia for Nuremberg, Germany
after selling his business. He wrote to his sister up to the mid-1930's
when they lost contact.

Dear Alice,
Have you ever found any information on your HERWALD family? I saw your query on the Katherinestadt site.
My husband's HERGENRIDERS left the former Soviet Union in 1912. They also left via Liverpool. From what I understand, they went through Ellis Island, but the ship that they came in on - the S.S. Dominion - arrived in Philadelphia - which is where the ship manifest records are found.
Allan's family came to Maywood, Illinois - to work in a foundry in the Chicago area. They left soon after to work the sugar beet campaign in Wyoming & Montana. We're still raising sugar beets!
Allan's gm was Sophia DIES
- dau of Adam DIE & Sophia KNOLL. They were from Katherinestadt.
She (gm Sophia) married
Johann David HERGENRIDER (various spellings) in Unterwalden in
1904 - which is where they lived & left!
I research mostly in Carbon County, Montana - but if there's anything that I could help you with, please feel free!
All the best,
Karen

Amazing site !! --- who would have thought that there is now some hope that I'll be able to trace my ancestery. My father John (18 yrs.) and his brother Philip (16 yrs) immigrated to the US in the late spring of 1912 and worked for their "sponsors" in Oshgosh, Wis. for that summer. (My Grandfathers name was Philip). They then moved to Calgary, at the encouragement of a cousin (Leinweber), that fall. They came from Yagoder (which I assume is Yagodnaya Polyana), --- and all the stories I recall him telling me as a child "fit" perfectly with the histories detailed throughout this site. --- I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they may be from the "same line".
