The feast of Samhain marks the onset of a darker, more introspective time of year, when access to the otherworld is easier than usual. The festival is also known as Halloween, when witches ride abroad:
Hey ho for Hallowe'en,
When all the witches are to be seen:

One year, one of my friends boyfriends made himself the coolest alien outfit. Do you remember the old twilight zone story where the aliens had heads that looked like huge green lightbulbs??? Well, this guy spent about four months making a huge head of out paper mache and then he sewed the body part, it was the coolest thing I ever saw. He had trouble walking through doors though, and once forgot to bend down and BOOM, it fell off and took him to the floor too, it was terrible but really funny!!!

Coolest things I've ever dressed as:
-- a kinda Brad Pitt vampyre when I had long brown hair, but it was two weeks before the movie so no one knew who I was;
-- ultra fave was a horrible fanged winged clawed vampyrebat dripping with blood
(see pictures: http://www.jps.net/seccomm/vampire.htm )
-- most ultrafave was dressing as fanged Cruella DeVille in a dalmatian fur coat for Disneyland's Hallowe'en party.
Favorite friends:
-- in WestHollywood a friend does a terrific Batgirl every year;
-- a perfect Powdered Toast Man from Ren and Stimpy;
-- the rudest/funniest was the deaf Miss America thanking everyone in a slurred nasal speech.

How To Build A Stormtrooper Costume

by: juliec@isi.com
The first thing to keep in mind is plan early.
1. Party location
Knowing this will help you know many people to invite and how elaborate the decorating will be.
2. Invitations
Make your own with the latest greeting card software or buy them. Mail one month before party. Put a small plastic spider or ant inside before sealing and mailing.
Other ideas include: packet of pumpkin seeds, mini horror mask
3. Food/Drinks
Potluck is best for no worries and no last minute cooking. Every person coming can bring food related to halloween or just favorite snacks: popcorn balls, candy in halloween shapes, orange and black sugar cookies or cupcakes. Frozen grapes colored like eyeballs are fun!! If you like fruitpunch, a large bowl with your favorite recipe and to keep it cold........freeze some punch in rubber gloves. When frozen, cut or peel off the rubber gloves. Now you have frozen hands floating around in your punch! Have one of your guests rent the keg of beer as their potluck dish!!
4. Decorations
Homemade or bought, you will needs lots and lots. Choose the rooms you willdecorate. Change all lightbulbs to colored lightbulbs. Take all pictures down and remove all other home decorations except tables and furniture.
Cover all furniture with white or pale color sheets. Cover walls with Halloween cut outs, spider webs/spiders. Halloween shaped barrels of Halloween toys are fun to have in a couple of corners, it's fun to play with toys!! Don't forget the front and backyard!! Build a cemetary........cut out tombstomes from wood or cardboard or styrofoam. Paint grey or black and write in your favorite sayings!!! Set around in the yard, don't forget the spider webs!!!
OTHER IDEAS: (by Elaine)
* Maybe a murder mystery for everyone to take part in? Or some sort of re-enactment?
* How about using a tv & vcr to play horror movies in the corner all night long?
Or make a tape of clips from horror movies.
* A seance -- those often freak people out.
* Sit around a circle of candles and tell:

KODAK: Tips For Great Halloween Pictures
Here is what one person wrote about their own Halloween party for 1998:
hempies@bellsouth.net
I always go all out. I painted the plastic covers of living masks. a grim reaper, a witch and a vampire, and put them on mannaquins i got from a store going out of business. the reaper is in his own grave yard, complete with tombstones and a toddler mummy sitting and enjoying the grave yard that is lite up with a green lite. the witch concocking a brew in a cast iron kettle, lite with a red lite. the vampire is sitting up in his coffin, lite up in blue. there is chains {skelton} climbing the chimney. screamer is sitting near the house to greet everyone. on the night of the party the master of death{my husband} hound from hell and the cyclopes show the kids lots of body parts, jello brain and heart, eyeballs, guts stuff like that, some kids waiting to get in heard the screaming a left before they could inter.after the master of death they came upon our gatekeeper,she had them put their hands in a bucket of guts to get a token to pay their toll to get into the manor. they rung a halloween doorbell. the mistress vampire of the house {me} lets them in and shows them around her cript complete with life size vampire coffin for taking pictures. these kids where big hams crossing their arms over their chest and everything. then they go to the kithen to see what the witch {living mask} so she is kind of scary. she show them caged katie{ a three foot skelton touched up with paint with a wig made from babydoll hair. and put in a bird cage} she is so cool. from there they go to a seance. we had gross food for everyone. eyeball's, boogers on a stick, butterscotch bugs, witch hats, applefingers with caramel dip & chip with blood curdling dip. i worked up a poster of the menu, it turned out great. I replaced all of the pictures in the house with pics from the net. added more candles then usual, covered books with cool covers{witches cookbook,etc...}, i also made things for the bathroom {cobweb face power,essence of toad etc...}. I transformed the living room, kitchen, bath and hallway. anyway the party was a big hit, we scared some kids to death. even the grownups had a ball. i'm sure we will do it again next year.
YES, costumes are always mandatory.
Last year when I made my invitations, I added a large line stating that. All of our friends know that if they are not dressed up they can't come in and we are very strict!!! I sometimes have a bag of bits and pieces of costumes for people to choose from if they forgot to wear a costume. Another thing I like to do is get everyone to bring a carved pumpkin. Then I put a candle in and keep them lit all through
the party. During the party a couple of us will judge the pumpkins and then give out three prizes. It's really cool to have a bunch of lit carved pumpkins sitting around, they smell good and look sooooo cool!!!!
* Look out for Universal Pictures "Classic Monsters" series of keychains.
They're really cool, and each one is also a flashlight. They come in: Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy.
* Fake fangs.
These plastic novelty items can usually be found at dollar stores.
* Books:
either blank books with horror covers, or actual horror novels.
* I've seen some great Halloween candles!
Basic black or orange candles can be okay, but there are also cool novelty candles in the forms of bleeding skulls/hands, werewolves, witches, ghosts, etc...
* Kids toys
For example, I found some packs that contain large gruesome plastic bugs, complete with containers of coloured liquids (supposed to be pus, blood, guts) which you insert into the bug and then you can squish it (and other neat things). I know! Sounds silly, but Halloween is about letting the kid in you emerge.
* For big-spenders, how about a copy of the 1978 John Carpenter film "Halloween"?
Or "Psycho", "Night of the Living Dead", "An American Werewolf In London", "Halloween", etc......

Halloween in Transylvania...
Serban101@aol.com (Ioan Serban)
The Halloween party at the Dracula's Castle in Transylvania is going to feature a costume parade, a costume contest, eating and drinking (bloody drinks are included)...
We have contacted a few travel agencies to handle the logistics of air travel and hotels, but the getting the party organized is our responsibility, The Serban Society, which is fond of geting involved in unusual events around the world, and to bring excitement to those who realize that life needs to be lived, and the many ways to live life includes, at least once a year, celebrating the dead also... it will be lots of fun in Romania, I assure you, and there will be a chance to see 2 or 3 medieval towns during the trip as well.
If you send me a mailing address, I can mail you a brochure with a proposed schedule, which involves a trip between October 26-November 2...
"It's easy to turn this night of fantasy into permanent picture memories," says Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the New York Institute of Photography, "but you have to follow two simple guidelines or, excuse the pun, you won't have a ghost of a chance."
"The most important guideline," says DeLaney, "is to know exactly what you want to be the subject of your picture. Then, when you look through the viewfinder of your camera, make your subject the most important thing in the frame and try not to show anything that distracts from it. The second guideline is to try to capture the 'feeling' of the occasion too."
For example, if you are shooting a jack-o-lantern, it's your subject. Make that clear by moving in close and almost filling the frame with the pumpkin. Keep the background simple so it doesn't distract from your subject. Hint: To make this picture even more interesting, include the faces of the kids or Dad or Mom hovering over it. Get down low so that you see their faces looming over the top of the pumpkin. Careful now, you don't
want to cut any heads off, even on Halloween.
Now the second guideline. To capture the eerie "feeling" of Halloween, shoot at night using "ghoul" lighting. Rule One is to turn off your strobe! You don't want pictures with its cold, clear light. Rather, you're looking for eerie lighting that captures the "spirit" of Halloween.
Hint: To capture the glow of a jack-o-lantern, don't light just one candle inside the pumpkin. Two or three lit candles will produce a far better picture.
When you take a picture of your favorite goblin in costume, have a helper shine a flashlight from off to one side or from below, the way we all did as kids. This is "ghoul" lighting and it will produce wonderfully scary lighting in your pictures. The biggest mistake amateurs make is to shoot from too far back. So get in close and fill the frame. You don't have to shoot from head-to-toe. Rather, you're usually better off if you fill the frame with just the head and shoulders. And bend down low to kid's-eye level. Don't shoot from adult-level.
Hint: If your kids wears a mask, take two shots - one with the mask on and one without so that in future years you'll be able to identify the little devil behind the mask (and you may be able to use the picture for your Xmas card). And don't forget fido. Put a mask or silly hat on the family pet, and shoot - but fast. Fido or Cleo will be too embarrassed to suffer this indignity for more than a few seconds.
"The key to good Halloween pictures," concludes DeLaney, "is to capture the spirit - the feeling - of the occasion. The spirit of Halloween is ghoulish fun and silliness. So for great Halloween pictures, know what you want the subject of each of your pictures to be, and make it important in the frame. Then add 'mood' that captures the spirit of Halloween by the ghoulish way you light your pictures or the silly way you pose your subjects."
