CHURCH HISTORY

The Methodist Episcopal Church organized at Lovely Lane Chapel in
Baltimore, Maryland, during the Christmas Conference in December
1784. John Wesley was the founder and the organizers were Francis
Asbury and Thomas Coke, and the attendance included two African
American preachers, Harry Hoosier and Richard Allen. Because of
racial segregation and mistreatment, Richard Allen and a group of
slaves and freedmen left the church and founded the African
Methodist Episcopal (AME), in Philadelphia, Pennsyvania, in 1794.
In later years, the Little Zion Church was organized after several
persons withdrew from Saint Matthew African Methodist Episcopal
(AME) Church located in Tensaw, Alabama in 1908. After prayer
and seeking God's guidance, the following members came out of
Saint Matthew:
JACK MOSES; MORIAH MOSES; ED JAMES, SR.; BEN
DANIEL; ISAAC JAMES;
ANNIE MCCANTS; MARY JAMES; LAURA LOUIS; MOLLIE
COBS; DAVE COBS;
JOHN HENRY MUNNERLYN; CHARLIE MUNNERLYN;
MARTHA GOODMAN; AND
MAHALIA MUNNERLYN.
They moved here to this present location and conducted worship
services in the Little Hope Society Hall. The Society owned three
acres of land which was purchased from Samuel Leggett and Annie
Leggett. This church went out from the African Methodist Episcopal
(AME) Church and returned to the Methodist Episcopal Church
under the leadership of Rev. G. Lang, District Superintendent of the
Central Alabama Conference. The pastor then were the Rev. N. J.
Adams.
After having worship services in the Little Hope Society Hall from
1908 to 1910, the officers, Jack Moses, Isaac James, Ed James and
Moriah James and other members bought one acre of land from the
Little Hope Society Hall and built the first church building in 1910.
The building was named the Little Zion Methodist Episcopal Church.
In later years, the Little Hope Society went out of existence. The
heirs of this society, Ed Moses, Ed James, Jr., and Cornelia James
were holding the deeds to the property and sold the Little Zion
Methodist Church two acres. This made the total of three acres of
land for Little Zion Methodist Episcopal Church.
Under the leadership of Rev. A. R. Ortry, a second church building
was built. This building was rebuilt in 1965 under the leadership of
Rev. J.A. Joseph. Also in 1965 the church changed its name from
Little Zion Methodist Episcopal Church to Little Zion United
Methodist Church to coincide with the United Methodist Church
denominational merger of Black folk and White folk as one church.
In 1993 a dispute over land property rights between neighboring land
owners and the church, hindered the progress of a third building for a
new place of worship. In October 1994, by the grace of God, the
neighboring land owners, Arabelle B. Jernigan and Gladin Scott
Byrne, settled the dispute by donating one acre of land each to the
church. This made a total of five acres of land for Litttle Zion United
Methodist Church.
