FROM RESCUE WITH LOVE
CALL SIGN:
"PEDRO"
The U.S. Air Force HH-43B helicopter was
manufactured by Kamen Aircraft Corporation in Bloomfield, Connecticut. With
it's auxiliary equipment, the helicopter could be used for aerial pickup
of survivors, fire control and suppression, crash entry and survivor removal,
and immediate first aid.
After 14 years of devoted service, the HH-43 "Huskie" was retired from use
in April, 1973. Even though the HH-43 is no longer in use by the military,
the Kaman Corporation uses it to train pilots to fly the
K-MAX Aerial
Truck helicopters. The 43's flight and handling characteristics
are basicly the same as the K-Max both having the intermeshing rotor design.

Detachment 1, 38 ARRSQ Mission at Phan Rang AB,
RVN
Detachment One is a Local Base Rescue unit, equiped with two Kaman
HH-43B helicopters. The mission of the unit is fourfold: Local Base Rescue
and Fire Suppression, Air Crew Recovery, Base Support, and Training. We serve
four F-100 Fighter Squadrons under the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing; three
squadrons of C-123 "Providers" under the 315th Tactical Airlift Wing; the
Canberra Bombers of Number Two Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force;
the AC-119's (Shadow) of "B" Flight, 17th Special Operations Squadron, and
the AC-119K's of "A" Flight, 18th Special Operations Squadron. Because of
our proximity to other bases, detachment one stands ready to assist Detachment
eight of Cam Ranh Bay in any mission, when we might be required. The area
covered is roughly a seventy mile radius from Phan Rang Air Base, north of
Nha Trang, west almost to the Cambodian border, and south, halfway to Ben
Hoa.

COLORS OF THE ARRS SHIELD
The blue represents the sky, the golden light;
a ray of hope for those in need. The angel symbolizes protection and rescue
from danger, while the red robe signifies the valor with which ARS carries
out it's humanitarian mission.
ARRS CODE
"It is my duty, as a member of the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service,
to save life and to aid the injured.
I will be prepared at all times to perform my assigned duties quickly and
efficiently, placing these duties before personal desires and comforts. These
things I do That Others May
Live."
HIGH
FLIGHT
Oh, I have slipped the surley bonds of
earth
and danced the skies on laughter-silvered
wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling
mirth
Of sun-split clouds--and done a hundred
things
You have not dreamed of--wheeled and soared
and swung
High in sunlit silence. Hov'ring
there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and
flung
My eager craft through footless halls of
air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning
blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy
grace
Where never a lark, or even eagle
flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've
trod
The high untrespassed sancity of
space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of
God.

HISTORY OF THE FINAL FLIGHT
On 10 October 1968, at approximately 2037 hours an HH-43B helicopter (Call
Sign Pedro 44) SN 58-1845, assigned to Detachment 1, 38th Aerospace Rescue
and Recovery Squadron, Phan Rang AB, Republic of Vietnam, crashed and burned
while on an emergency intercept mission. A B-57 aircraft had declared an
inflight emergency and Pedro 44 was scrambled with the fire suppression kit
(FSK) to standby for the emergency landing. During the landing roll out of
the B-57, Pedro 44 entered a left hand climbing turn as if departing the
area for return to the alert pad. Almost simultaneously, and without any
radio transmission, the helicopter crashed and burned inflicting fatal injuries
to all five aircrew members. Firefighting equipment and medical assistance,
already on hand for the B-57 emergency, responded immediately to the scene,
extinguishing the fire within 15 seconds and immediately removed the crewmembers
from the aircraft.
(TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE ACCIDENT REPORT DATED 18
OCTOBER 1968 BY LT. COL. ROBERT M. FOSTER)
WHAT HAPPENED
The primary cause of this major aircraft accident was material
failure of the azimuth bar to "L" crank rod. This caused an inflight
disintegration of the rotor system and loss of aircraft control.

served throughout Southeast Asia, from Thailand to VietNam during the VietNam
conflict.
To the Firefighters, Crewchiefs, Medics, PJ's, Pilots, and Co-pilots on the
HH-43's, H-1's, HH-3's, HH-53's, and the HC-130's which placed their lives
at risk to save the lives of others.
I served as an airborne firefighter aboard the HH-43B at Phan Rang
AB, RVN from Jan. 70 to Jan. 71. Was assigned to Det. 1, 38th ARRS.
Also flew with the Army Dustoff, 247th Medical Detachment there at Phan Rang
during the days I wasn't flying my assigned duties with the Air Force.
Flew on many missions recieving four Air Medals, Commendation Awards from
the Kaman Aerospace Corporation, and my permanent Aircrew Member Badge (Wings)

RESCUE EQUIPMENT USED ABOARD THE HH-43
AS WELL AS OTHER RESCUE HELICOPTERS.
MA-1A Rescue
Basket
Used primarly over the water to recover inert victims. The basket could
be trolled through the water to accomplish the recovery. The MA-1A was cumbersome
and difficult to maneuver through the cabin door. It was not the rescue device
of choice.
Forest
Penetrator
This was the most widely used rescue device for it could be used
for a multiple pick-up. With three fold down seats and three slings, it could
be sent down through trees with much success. With an attached flotation
collar, it was used for many water rescues.
Rescue
Sling
Also known as the "horse collar", was very unfamiliar in use to many
of those to be rescued. A crewmember was usually sent down to make sure it
was used properly.
Rescue
Seat
Much like the Forest Penetrator, the Rescue seat had three seats
as well but were in a permanent down position. It was not to be used for
recovery in dense foliage areas.
Stokes
Litter
This was a very difficult rescue device since it took up so much
room in the cabin and was hard to handle. Was only used in a situation where
the victim needed to be immobilized.

FIREFIGHTING FROM THE HH-43
*********************************************
FIRE SUPPRESSION
KIT
There were two types of FSK's used. The soft hose kit shown in the photo
above and the later design hard hose FSK.
Both kits carried the same amount of foam and water, (83 gallons of mixture,
yielding 690 gallons of expanding foam.) Had 50 seconds of continued use
and could reach up to 50 feet on full stream. This proved to be ample time
because of the "rotor wash" behind us. Our objective was not to extinguish
the fire but to cut a path to the burning aircraft and hold the path til
the other firefighter could accomplish the rescue.
The soft hose FSK weighed approx. 1000 lbs. full and approx. 5 feet long,
4 feet wide, and 3 1/2 feet high. The hard hose FSK weighed approx. 1250
lbs full and approx. 9 feet long, 4 1/2 feet wide and 4 feet high.
Preparing for hook-up to the FSK with use of positioning pole.
