"Although only six, Mary knows her standing in the world. The other evening at Pizza Hut
a young boy walked past her. She slapped herself on the forehead and said, "Ugh, he's
making kissy faces at me!" And then, matter-of-factly, "Boys love me." Her dad has told
her that she may begin to date when she is 20."

"Mary takes after her aunt, by
the way. That is, she's wise.
A wise acre!
"She was coming out of the Administration building with
her dad last night and some theatre students were standing outside.
One said, 'Yet another lovely lady leaving the building.'
Mary turned her head back towards him, rolled her eyes, and said
in a very sarcastic voice, 'WHAT--EV-ER!'
"Everybody burst out laughing and his friend said, 'Yet another
blonde brushes you off.' Then Mary turned around and said, 'Oh, please! Just give me a
break!'"

"Mary and I went to see a movie that afternoon while Duane was
taking his class. It was more expensive than I thought, and I spent all my money on the
tickets. A little girl with her parents were walking away from the concession area with
a large tub of popcorn as we came in. It reminded Mary that she wanted popcorn, too. I
had to tell her that I that I didn't have any money left.
"'That's okay,' Mary said. 'We can just ask that girl to share.
She won't mind.'
"Mary tried to drag me to where they were sitting, but I managed to
direct her to another aisle.
"After we saw the movie, we went to the mall. Mary was thirsty,
so I dug around in my purse to see if I had any loose change. I managed to pull out just
enough to buy Mary a small Coke and a cookie. We sat down and she drank her
pop and ate her cookie. After she was done, Mary asked me for more.
"'I'm sorry, sweetie,' I told her. 'I spent all my money.'
"Preschoolers always seem to say the most embarrassing things in
their loudest voices. And so it was with Mary. She announced to the mall at large,
'I am tired of being so poor when I am so starving.'"
