You can take the Corpsman out of the Corps but you can't take the Corps out of the Corpsman.
Most of us were dragged out of Naval life kicking and screaming. They taught us how to look, act and feel like Marines. We absorbed Marine Corps History and Traditions. We learned how to march, hump a pack and dress battle wounds. We looked with scorn on long haired Sailors with their wrinkled uniforms and flabby bodies.
We became Fleet Marine Corpsmen. Give us Marines to take care of and we didn't care where they sent us.
For most of us it was the best part of our lives, the proudest things we ever did. We might not be Marines but we were no longer Sailors.
Sure, we took a lot of ribbing but when push came to shove it was us they called for and we came running.
