I respect his talent as a filmmaker and recognize the innovations he bought to action pictures that have been copied by American cinema, but aside from "Mission Impossible 2" I have never run out to see a film or rent a video that John Woo directed. That said I know that there are a lot of fans of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat internationally and American DVD owners can now own John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow" and "A Better Tomorrow II" on DVD from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment. "A Better Tomorrow II" is widely considered to be superior to the original with one of the most epic gun battle sequences ever filmed. The film recaps the first installment quickly as we follow hotshot cops and ruthless criminals in a relentless epic that spans from New York to Hong Kong. Anchor Bay's DVD presentation of "A Better Tomorrow II" presents the film in an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio. The picture is very sharp with little noticeable artifacts on any kind. There is a choice of either the original Cantonese or an English dubbed two channel mono soundtrack with optional English subtitles encoded on to the DVD too. The sound is clear and full despite the limitations of monaural sound. The menus feature full motion scene transitions and are easy to navigate. The Hong Kong and International Theatrical Trailers are presented in a (1.85:1) aspect ratio with Cantonese mono sound and English subtitles. "A Better Tomorrow" and "A Better Tomorrow II" are both available now. © Copyright 2001 By Mark A. Rivera All Rights Reserved.
