Universal just keeps getting better and better with putting quality where it counts in every way with the DVD Edition of "The Bone Collector." "The Bone Collector" is a thriller and mystery starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie along with an ensemble cast about a onetime top homicide investigator now paralyzed from the neck down teaming up with a young rookie, who he guides to bravely search for clues that will help them solve the case.

Universal delivers a top shelf DVD with a great widescreen anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer with no artifacts, grain, edge enhancements, and noise. The colors are dead on, even for this dark film and the blacks are solid and deep. The Soundtracks are equally impressive. Universal includes no less than three choices for DVD consumers. An English Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack that is positively excellent and an edgier English DTS 5.1 Surround track as well as a French Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack, despite the misprint on the back of the DVD case, which says the French Track is Dolby Surround 2.0. English Captions are also included.

Philip Noyce provides an excellent and informative feature length commentary that not only gives the Director's reasons for his artistic choices and the miracles of CGI, as well as the challenges the Actors faced in making the film among other things. There is a featurette detailing the making of the film with plenty of behind the scenes video footage and interviews, excellent production notes, and detailed Cast and Filmmaker biographies. The Theatrical Trailer for "The Bone Collector" and a Universal Showcase Theatrical Release Thriller, "The Skulls" is included along with two other trailers for Universal's "Cry Freedom" and "Fear."

DVD-ROM features with more behind the scenes features and web links round off this Universal DVD release and it is not even a special edition release in name. If only more DVD Producers would follow Universal's lead. "The Bone Collector" is one of the best DVDs I have seen released this year so far and I highly recommend it without reservation. "The Bone Collector" streets on March 14, 2000.
