Bankston genealogy research: Southern descendants of Anders Bankson and Gertrude Rambo

Bankston genealogy: Southern Signatures and Time Line.

24 Oct 2007
This site pursues the most important concept in genealogy.
and you are strongly encouraged to talk to your oldest relatives -- NOW.

Lawrence Bankston located in Edgecombe County, North Carolina by 1744.
The Southern Bankstons did not make our genealogical job easy.
Lawrences, Jacobs, Johns and Peters abound and confuse. A couple of them have no known ancestors.

The Bankston time line is a spreadsheet
with links to photos of original signatures and to document transcriptions.

Please participate in our blogs at Cynthia's blog and Bankston time line blog.
Thanks to Google, for free web space for pictures, documents and blogs.
Here are a few sample signatures and one transcription. (Thanks to Rev. Cynthia Vold Forde.)
ENJOY.

You can help by sending us FACTS, signatures and transcriptions.
If you know of an event which is missing from the timeline, let us know.
Send the source citation and attach a picture if possible.
We need EVERY fact about and SIGNATURE of these early Bankstons
in order to more accurately depict their lives and to separate them from one another.
My e-mail address is in the middle of this page.

Do you want to spend your time and money researching
someone else's ancestors?

Your genealogy is only a GUESS until you've found proof in original, handwritten documents such as wills, deeds, court records, family bibles, or the like.
Always be skeptical.
Books and websites often contain bad GUESSes presented as if they were fact.
Anything published contains errors and often contains speculation masquerading as fact.
Until you find original documents, all you have is hearsay, one step removed from rumors and speculation.

What is your response when a correspondant writes, "My information differs from yours.
I show a different wife and different children. Where did you get your information?"
If you have no sources, you might as well make up a fiction.
The sooner you learn to keep track of your sources, the less trouble you will have later.
Confirm your information with primary sources, and Cite Your Sources when you share information.

The Bankson volume of The Rambo Family Tree is about to be published, but the most complete, most current information will always be on the Rambo genealogy web site.
Purchasing details will be posted on this web site as soon as the book is available.
All of my correspondants will also receive a form letter or e-mail with ordering information as soon as the book is available.
A read-only CD of the Rambo genealogy is available for $30. Adobe Acrobat allows comprehensive searches. While I don't want to charge too much for a read-only CD, I also don't want the publication badly delayed by mailing hundreds of CDs. A couple of cousins who know how much work I've done have suggested that I charge $30 for it, so that is the asking price. After the book goes to publication, the CD will be revised and improved, so you might want to wait to order it. Send your check to this address in Shawnee Mission.

COMPUTERS FAIL, Do you have a backup?
What would you do if your computer failed
RIGHT NOW?
Whenever re-typing all your changes would be painful, you MUST backup your data.
Backups have become very simple. I suggest that you send me a CD as a backup of your data.

Beverly Nelson Rambo published the Rambo Family Tree in 1986 and died of cancer in 1990. She trusted her sister, as her executor, to conserve her Rambo information, but the trust was betrayed and Beverly's Rambo materials were destroyed.

PROVIDE for your genealogical materials in Your WILL.
Otherwise you can kiss them goodbye. Between 1986 and 1990, Beverly had accumulated much more information about the Rambo families and was preparing to publish a revision. She asked me to continue her work, but I arrived in Los Angeles the day after she died. Her sister always said that she would send Beverly's Rambo materials to me, but in fact has been a "stone wall," promising anything over the phone but doing nothing. Once this paragraph appeared on this web site, she did send a small package of copies Beverly had made of published materials amounting to 3 inches of the 22 feet of materials Beverly possessed. I believe that the majority of Beverly's collection was destroyed when her brother moved, so am compiling this edition of The Rambo Family Tree without the aid of Beverly's work.

All Bankston descendants are encouraged to join the Swedish Colonial Society.
Their quarterly newsletter is a real treat and often discusses our Colonial ancestors. If you decide to discard your copy, consider donating it to the genealogical collection of your choice.
The Swedish Colonial Society web site contains several previous issues of the newsletter and biographies of forefathers Peter Gunnarson Rambo and Anders Bengtsson written by Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig, the most eminent New Sweden historian.

Similarly Peter Craig's book, The 1693 Census of Swedes on the Delaware, is very interesting for Rambo descendants and provides an excellent example of thorough documentation. Send a check for $40 payable to Peter Craig. His second book, The 1671 Census of the Delaware is also available for $25. Send your order directly to him at:

Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig

If you have a web page, please add a link from your page to this one, http://members.aol.com/RamboBook/bankston.htm. THANKS. My favorite internet search engine, Google, orders the results from its searches according to the number of links it finds, so your page & mine will show up higher in Google's results. Please send me URLs of interest to Bankstons.

E-mail me at rsbeatty@aol.com
Please be patient
as I often "reside" where there are no phone lines.
Attachments will most likely be deleted by AOL before I can retrieve them, so Please establish a dialogue with me before sending attachments.

Genealogical correspondance is a pleasure, so please send your questions or information.
My e-mail address is rsbeatty@aol.com.
I do enjoy replying promptly, however it may be MONTHS before I can reply. PLEASE BE PATIENT. I will respond; I will answer your questions; and I will acknowledge your contributions as I get to them.

For the curious among you, I travel by motorcycle, sleep out under the stars every night, and may not have access to the internet or a phone line for an entire month. (Yes, I really do prefer to live this way!)
Over 200 Rambo cousins send me e-mail. My overwhelming backlog dates back to May 2001.
I do apologize to all those cousins who wait and wonder if I'll ever respond. I often neglect my e-mail, sometimes for several months. -- cousin Ron Beatty

I've done enough typing to last several lifetimes. If your genealogical information has been typed into a computer, please send the computer files or GEDCOMs on CD. Consider it an OFFSITE BACKUP & stuff all your genealogy files onto it. You need to learn to backup ALL your data to avoid catastrophic loss. Part of any proper backup is an off-site storage (in case of flood or fire). By sending me copies of all your genealogy, you are establishing a good habit. I am a private individual, financially secure, with no desire to exploit or profit from your data. Send your data on CD to my mailing address along with any or jpegs or paper copies of original source documents (especially Bible records) that prove Rambo relationships to:

If your letter gets returned, take it back to your local post office and tell them that the Shawnee Mission Post Office hires incompetent help every so often and has a peculiar numbering scheme for P.O. Boxes. Assure them that the address is good and insist that they resend it to Shawnee Mission without charging you for the obvious incompetence of the Shawnee Mission Post Office. (If this web site is still up I am alive and paying the bills and paying for that P.O. Box.)

I'm often asked for my lineage, so can reply that I'm #112112212852:
Peter Gunnarson Rambo,
Gunnar,
John,
Mons,
Andrew,
Moses,
George,
Henry,
George Washington,
Cyrus Cleveland,
Rex Vale,
Lucille (Rambo) Beatty, and
me - Ron Beatty.
Since you are descended from Gertrude (Rambo) Bankson, Peter Gunnarson Rambo's daughter, we are at least 11th cousins.
By 1744 your Bankston ancestors had migrated southwards into North Carolina from Pennsylvania (skipping Virginia entirely !!). Before 1744 the Bankston name did not exist. The ancestors in Pennsylvania spelled the name Bankson (or Bengtsson in the 1600s). Whenever you see the name Bankston before 1744, you are looking at "doctored" genealogy.
My ancestors migrated to Somerset Co., PA before 1770; to Muskingum Co., OH in 1804; and to Van Buren Co., IA in 1853. Here's a link to my personal web site.

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet is my favorite genealogy web site.

Pages of personal interest: Ron Beatty's home page, the Rambo genealogy, the Argo Families Revisited by Wesley Argo, cousin Jean's Schenck and Hegeman genealogy, Eric's RPM coins, Janie's Santa Fe Guest Rentals in New Mexico, Partly Dave's Neighbourhood Garage in Vernon, BC., and now Eve's Garden Organic Bed and Breakfast, a wonderful, eclectic, artistic papercrete alternative living learning mecca in Marathon, Texas.
