The RAMBO FAMILY TREE by Beverly Nelson Rambo 26 May 2006. 2nd edition, final pre-publication draft by Ron Beatty http://members.aol.com/RamboBook RAMBO36.TXT is the name of this file. It covers only one generation of Rambos. This is not a web page. It is ASCII, one of 50 Rambo text files. If you view this file in a web browser (like Internet Explorer), the text runs off the right edge of the screen (and you cannot specify "word wrap"). You will need to save this file to disk and use any word processor to view it. If you find one ancestor, but have trouble finding earlier ancestors, read the "Introduction" web page. The file APPENDIX.TXT explains the numbering system. Notice that each earlier generation has one less digit in the number. If a family had more than nine children, the tenth child is numbered "A," the eleventh "B," and so on. The web site contains much more information about Rambos, genealogy, and the forthcoming book. Check the "Introduction" page there first and proceed as appropriate. Generally you will find no mention of living persons on the web or in the book. If you do want to see your name in print or on the web, you must send me an explicit request. All Rambo descendants, regardless of surname, are encouraged to send their ancestry for inclusion in the third edition of the book. Contact rsbeatty@gmail.com, but be patient as my e-mail is neglected for months at a time. If you knew the amount of work involved in this effort and the number of correspondants you'd understand. (My personality defects exacerbate the problem.) The file ENDNOTES.TXT contains the list of references. Within the paragraphs about your ancestor, you may see numbers enclosed in parenthesis, such as this: (589) or this: (589),, p. 32) These numbers correlate to a reference number in the file ENDNOTES.TXT. See the web page "Introduction" for an explanation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The children of [#316243] Dr. Samuel and Lydia (Fort) Rambo, his second wife, [son of Daniel, Lawrence, Lawrence, Swan, Peter]. 3162433. DAVID NOEL DALE, b. 27 Mar 1910, of Dalark, AR in 1921 ( Details: The text of that article follows: "[Editor's Note: The following history is a typescript of a copy of the original document written by Lalah Rambo Dale, dated 1917-1920. We are greatly indebted to Mr. Marvin Rambo of El Dorado, Ark., for his donation of a copy to our archives, and permission to share it with our members and other interested persons. In 1981 we received an interesting letter from Mr. Rambo after he ran across a copy of the Amy Jean Greene Memorial Edition of the Journal, which was a history on Manchester. Over a period of several months of correspondance, and most happily for us, Mr. Rambo not only sent us a copy of the family history written by his "Aunt Lalah Rambo Dale," but he also contributed much additional information obtained from his own research and resolved a number of questions we had been unable to answer, such as: James Rambo and Reuben J. Rambo were the same person. Augustus B. Rambo and James Rambo were brothers. When they came to Arkansas from South Carolina in the 1830s, James was married to Holly D. Malone and Augustus B. was engaged to her sister, Julia Ann. Matilda Rambo, a sister, arrived in Arkansas sometime later with her husband, Edward M. Harris. James Rambo built a house in the Hot Springs area, then moved to the Manchester neighborhood in 1837, which may account for the lot entries in his name. He had one son, Albert, born in 1837, who was living with his uncle E. M. Harris in 1850. Augustus B. Rambo cleared land and built a large log home near the Ouachita River two miles off the "trail," which later became known as the James Trigg place. David Dale, son of Lalah, says he was familiar with the old log house; that it was made of square sawed heart cypress logs pegged together. This would explain its still being lived in some 100 years later. It seems the house was already built when Augustus attempted the journey to Georgia to get his bride (probably 1836). Such a house, built with hand tools, could have taken two years. The 1830 census shows Augustus living with a brother Albert, in South Carolina and owning seventeen slaves, some of which he no doubt brought with him to Arkansas. At the time Lalah Rambo Dale was writing this history, a family tradition said the Rambo family descended from Joseph Rambo who came to South Carolina from France in the late eighteenth century. Marvin Rambo, who is a son of Augustus Beall, grandson of Augustus Edward, and great-grandson of Augustus Baldwin Rambo, has researched the history in more recent years and obtained new information. He was fortunate to discover a copy of the will of Laurence Rambo, in Edgefield District, South Carolina, dated 1772, probated 1782. He left four sons and five daughters, one of whom was Joseph, father of Augustus Baldwin Rambo. Other records show that this Joseph married Susannah Hogg rather than Susannah Chaney as Lalah Dale has it. Laurence Rambo back to Peter Gunnarson is well documented. Peter came from Sweden in 1640 as one of the founders of "Christina" colony in Delaware. Many Rambo families reside in Sweden to the present day. James McCullugh Dale, husband of Lalah Rambo, died in 1921, age 77. His obituary, published July 21, 1921, in the Arkadelphia Southern Standard, stated that he was survived by his wife and three sons, John R., Noel of Dalark, and Shud Dale of Noco, Arizona; two brothers, Dr. J. R. Dale of Texarkana and D. T. Dale of Arkadelphia. Lalah Rambo Dale died 26 September 1935. She is buried in the family plot, Rose Hill Cemetery.] 1917/1920 Rambo Family This brief history of our family is written for my dear brother Augustus Beall Rambo by his sister who hopes that he will prize it highly, keeping it for future generations; and that they will cherish the memory of their parents and grand-parents, and live to be a credit to their ancestry. It seems that so far as our knowledge goes none of our family have been very famous, few have been rich but they have made good citizens, serving their country when opportunity afforded - they have been honorable, refined, and most of them religious. Most of the following information was given me by our father who was the last of the Rambo family, at least in this state, for many years. His father died when the son was an infant (1846), the mother died in 1868, the sister, in 1878. Since that time our father, with his children, have been the sole representatives of the family; our branch of the family, at least. The founder of our branch of the family was Joseph Rambo, who came from France to S. C. late in the 18th century. He was 14 years of age at that time. We know nothing of his ancestry, I regret to say. I think his father must have imigrated to America, bringing a family with him. Joseph must have had at least one brother, whose descendants form the other branches of the family. The French form of the name was, I think, spelled Ramveoux, but by English tongues pronounced Rambo, and the family early adopted that form of the name. They were among the many Huguenots who were driven from France by Catholic persecution, and came to South Carolina. [See Editor's Note.] Joseph Rambo married an English woman, or at least one of English descent. Her name is not positively known but I believe it was (now known to have been) Susan Chaney. [See Editor's Note.] Her children are known to have had cousins of that name, and her son Augustus named his only daughter Susanna Chaney which we think was in honor of his mother. The family lived in Edgefield district South Carolina, opposite Augusta, Georgia, which place was their market town. The children were Albert, James R., Augustus Baldwin, Matilda, and another daughter whose name I have never heard. (Mary) Very little is known of Joseph Rambo. We are told that he was a man of great physical strength, having trained himself to lift great weights by his teeth. In this way he could lift a small table with his wife seated upon it. (Let us hope she was a little woman.) He died at an early age as the result of an accident. According to the custom of the old south he employed a shoemaker to make the year's supply of shoes for family and slaves. One day while the shoemaker was at work our great-grandfather came in and began to joke and tease him. The shoemaker becoming worried, threw a wooden last at him, striking him in the side with the point of it. It all ended in a laugh and general good humor, but in a few minutes our grandfather became violently ill, and died as a result of the accident - a ruptured blood vessel. Before his death he freely forgave the shoemaker and requested that he be made suffer no punishment for the deed. The children thus left fatherless at an early age, were soon also bereaved by the death of their mother. Little is known of their early life, only that they suffered some hardships as orphans. Albert, the eldest, remained at, or near, the old home and became quite wealthy for his day. At the time of the Civil War he owned a large estate and many slaves. James and Augustus came to Arkansas in the early '30s. Their sister Matilda and her husband Edward M. Harris also moved here a little later. James and Augustus married sisters, Holly D. and Julia Ann Malone. James, the elder, was probably married before leaving South Carolina. He settled first at Hot Springs, and I think, kept a tavern there. At any rate, he was a noted gambler; card playing and horse racing being his favourite sports. However, he held very high ideals of a gambler's honor, and in later life reformed. In 1837 he moved to what is now Dallas County, Ark., then a part of Clark County. His wife died early, their only child, Albert Jefferson, also died at an early age. Our great-uncle James was married a second time and moved near Austin, Texas, where he owned a large ranch and raised fine horses. Here he and his wife died in the '70s, leaving no family. Edward M. Harris, who married our great-aunt Matilda Rambo, settled in Dallas Co. and for many years was prominent in county politics; serving several terms as county clerk and at least three terms as representative. He was noted for his firm upright character, and for charity and hospitality. He was a leader in the Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. After all the stories papa has told me of his "Uncle Ed" I still hear new ones that illustrate his extreme conscientiousness. I will record one of the many as an example of the neighborly kindness shown by the pioneers of our locality. It was when Dallas County was very sparsely settled and neighbors lived long distances apart. There had been a drouth and the corn crop was very short. People traveled long distances to buy corn. Mr. Harris made a better crop than most, and had a little corn to spare. One day a strange man rode a fine horse up to his gate followed by a negro driving a splendid team of mules and wagon. The stranger introduced himself to Mr. Harris who knew him by name as a prominent farmer of a distant locality. He explained that he was in search of corn and asked if Mr. Harris had any for sale. "Yes," replied Mr. Harris, "I have a few more bushels that I might spare." As he was speaking a cart drawn by a very poor ox team came up to the gate. It was driven by a woman whom Mr. H. knew to be a widow, of the poor and ignorant class. She said she would like to buy just a little corn, but had no money and could not promise to pay for it before the next year. Mr. Harris ordered one of his negroes to fill the cart with corn, then turning to the man he said "I'm sorry, sir, but I have no more corn to spare." The man was very indignant and considered himself greatly mistreated. He said "I came here ahead of this woman and asked to buy all your corn. I have plenty of money. I will give any price you may ask. This woman admits she has no money. It is very unlikely that she can ever pay you a cent." "That is true" said Mr. H. "I expect no payment from her. The corn is a gift to her. You have money and a good team, and you can easily buy corn elsewhere. If the widow had money to buy, her team is not able to haul a load very far." The man went away grumbling and the widow rejoicing. (E. M. Harris - born Feb. 2 - 1814, died May 28, 1888) Mr. and Mrs. Harris were married on the night "the stars fell" - 1833, I think. They had no children, but reared several orphans, among them Eliza and Joanna Taylor who became the wives of Judge Henry and Charles Land. Aunt Matilda died in 1871. Mr. Harris lived to a good old age. He was married again but left no children. I must not forget to mention here a niece of Aunt Matilda who came to this state with them. Her name was Matilda Pond and she was the orphan daughter of Aunt Matilda's sister Mary Rambo. She was married to Col. O'Baugh of Arkadelphia. She died early leaving three children, George, Lon, and Mary, whose families still live at Arkadelphia. Augustus Baldwin Rambo, our grandfather, was I think the youngest child of Joseph Rambo. He was born in Edgefield Dist., S. C. March 26th, 1808. We know little of his early life. He came to this state as early as 1836, perhaps several years earlier. We have not the exact date. He settled on the east bank of the Ouachita River on what is now known as the Peter Smith place. He was engaged to Julia Malone before leaving South Carolina. Her home was at Augusta, Georgia. When he had cleared some land and built the house he started back for his bride. He traveled by boat to New Orleans, intending to cross the Gulf by ship. He was dressed in the long "claw hammer" coat of that day, having seven hundred dollars in his pocket in the tail of the coat. While in a crowded place in New Orleans he was robbed, the pickpocket cutting off coattail, money and all. When he discovered his loss he turned back home, worked another year, and saved money enough to again make the trip. It must have been during this year that our grandmother's family came to this state. The old Malone family record states that the marriage took place in Hot Spring County, June 8th, 1837. Our grandfather's brother James, whose wife was also a Malone, was then living at Hot Springs and I think our grandparents were married at his home. They soon came to the pioneer home our grandfather had built for his bride. The old house is still in use and in fairly good condition. So far as I can learn it is older than any house in Dallas County, and must be among the oldest in Clark County. It is a "double" log house with a wide hall, and a low room over each large room "shed" rooms at the back. Here our father and his sister were born and reared. It was in Clark County till 1845 when Dallas County was formed. The River was the county line until after the Civil War when during carpetbag rule the line was moved several miles eastward to give to Clark County the large negro vote of this township. Thus our father and aunt were born in the same house but one in Clark County and the other in Dallas. At the time of our grandfather's settlement his nearest neighbors on the West side were about Arkadelphia; on the east beyond the Princeton and Tulip neighborhoods; and the nearest settlers on the north and south must have been at Benton and Camden. From a history of Dallas County written in 1890 I get the following description of this section: "When Squire Ramsey came to Dallas Co. in 1842 (then Clark Co.) he found nothing but Indian trails traveled by horseback, with four families in the Tulip settlement - Pressley Watts, Henry Gray, Jas. Kennedy, and Moses Overton; a few bear hunters, Colbreath and his son, near squire Ramsey's home; Dorris and his sons on Cypress Creek, the Rucks farm overseers; Maj. Owen, Messrs. Hudson, Strong and Joe Gray somewhere. There was but one house between Princeton and Malvern sites, and Choctaw Indian hunters roamed over the cournty. Bears, deer, panthers, wildcats and elk were common. 'Deer were as thick as hogs and turkeys wouldn't get out of your way' says the old squire. Indian trails ran from Arkadelphia to Pine Bluff, up the Saline to Little Rock and to Ecore a Fabre - now Camden. In 1843 settlers came in rapidly from Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama." When the above was written, Squire Ramsey was the oldest citizen of Dallas Co., But we know that Augustus Rambo was here as early as 1836. The squire does not mention him, perhaps because he lived two miles off the trail mentioned. In 1837 Nathan Strong settled two miles from our grandfather, on the trail. He was the Strong mentioned by Squire R., and was the second settler in this part of the county. Our grandfather made an unfortunate choice of land for his home. He built in the low river bottom where he was surrounded by dense forests, swamps, and canebrakes. Malaria was of course much more prevalent then than now, as there was so little clearing. The location partly accounts for the early deaths of so many members of the family. Augustus Rambo was a strong man, weighing 175 pounds. He was lefthanded, stammered slightly, and talked but little. He was very industrious, and prospered. In those days most settlers did little besides hunting and fishing, but he did little of either; spending his time at hard work. He owned several families of slaves but worked harder than any of them improving his farm. His neighbors said he would surely have been a rich man could he have lived a few years longer. He and his wife, also her father's family, were members of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, six miles west of Arkadelphia. Our people were among the founders of this church which is the second oldest Baptist church in the state. Augustus Rambo was clerk of the church until his death and it is said that he never missed a meeting unless prevented by high waters. So far as I know all early members of our father's family were of Baptist faith. Most of the pioneer families here were Methodists, the early churches being Manchester and Bethlehem. Our people attended services at these places, but held to their Baptist membership though 16 miles away. They entertained many pioneer ministers of both denominations, among those papa remembers well was Dr. Andrew Hunter who became noted throughout the state. At a later date when the Dunn families from Alabama settled below here, the old Alabama Baptist Church was organized, and our grandmother and her mother became members of it. Augustus Rambo died of pneumonia in 1846 when our father was less than a year old. In 1848 our grandmother was married to Mr. James M. Trigg who was the only father her children remembered. He made them a good stepfather. The old land entry was made in his name and dated 1836, but it was the land first settled by Augustus B. Rambo. In his day I think there was no homestead law in this state. So the entry was made by the second husband and dated back to time of settlement. Malone Family The father of our grandmother, Thomas B. Malone, was born in South Carolina in 1786. He later made his home at Augusta, Georgia, and was married to Winifred Saffold. I know little of their history before coming to this state. He was a teacher by profession and the family were all people of unusual culture and refinement. They were connected in some way with the family of Gen. Wade Hampton, one of their sons being named Hampton. They were also related to Gen. Magruder who met our father during the Civil War and claimed relationship with him on the Malone side. Thomas Malone was one of the early teachers of this state. We are told that he taught the first high school in the state in Little Rock in the '30's. He later taught at Arkadelphia and in his last years he moved to this neighborhood - the McCargo place, since known as the Scott place, now owned by Bob Hunter. He taught school at old Manchester church near here until his health failed. He died in 1847. His son Charles was also a teacher, but he died young. It seems they were short-lived people. Several of them were consumptives I think. Our great-grandmother Malone lived until about 1873. She made her home with our grandmother Julia Trigg until the marriage of her youngest child Pauline to Mr. Henry Strong when she went to live with them. She had a large family of children but outlived them all. After the death of Aunt Pauline (or Polly) she lived with her granddaughter Aunt Sue Willcox. She lived to be the oldest of all our ancestry of whom we have record, about 77. Several of her children died in infancy and childhood; four of them lived to be married: Holly D. married R. J. Rambo. She left one son, Albert Jefferson Rambo, who died in youth. Julia Ann was married to A. B. Rambo, and later to James M. Trigg. She had two children. Susanna Chaney Rambo (who married C. M. Willcox) and Augustus Edward Rambo, our father. J. Hampton married Holly Camp. Both died in middle age leaving one son William L. (called Lonny). Pauline was married to Henry Strong. She left three little children, Nat, Lura, and Louis. Lonny Malone went to Texas soon after the death of his parents and the family here lost all trace of him many years ago. So far as I know our father's family, the family of our Aunt Sue W., with Nat and Lura Strong, are the only living descendants of Thomas and Winnifred Malone. The Willcox family have the Malone family Bible which has an interesting record and has furnished me most of the dates given in this sketch. They failed to record the old grand-mother's death, but as well as I can calculate, it must have been in 1873. Our father's sister Susanna C. Rambo was educated in the Tulip school which was then the best in the state. Tulip was by that time a very aristocratic and wealthy place, and its schools were patronized by the governors and other prominent people of Little Rock. Our aunt was greatly beloved by a wide circle of friends. Papa was greatly devoted to his sister, as well as his mother, and spoke of them all his life as being among the best Christian women. At the time of his death he had in his coat pocket a letter written him by his sister forty five years before while he was on the Texas plains. Aunt Sue was a good musician, and the old piano given her by her parents is still a cherished relic in her family. In her girlhood (1859), she with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harris, made a visit to the relatives in South Carolina. Her father's brother Albert at that time owned a large estate and many slaves. His family consisted of one daughter, Eugenia, who married a Dr. Twiggs. At the end of the Civil War she was left a widow with two small sons. Our aunt corresponded with these relatives as long as she lived, but since then we have heard nothing of them. Susanna C. Rambo was married to C. M. Willcox in 1861. She died in 1878 leaving six children, two of whom died in childhood. Dennis Trigg Willcox, the eldest, died several years ago in Texas leaving four children. "Gus," the next son, and Lena (married to Dr. T. F. Rutherford) live on their father's homeplace. Berry, the youngest, lives in Little Rock. I come now to write of the last of the old family - the only one of whom we ever saw - our father. Augustus Edward Rambo was the son of Augustus Baldwin Rambo and Julia Malone Rambo of whom I have written. He was born at the old home March 19th, 1846. He was named in honor of his father and his uncle-in-law E. M. Harris. His father died Dec. 1st, 1846, leaving a widow and two small children, our aunt being then nearly five years old, our father less than one year. As I have before stated, his mother was married a second time in 1848 to Mr. Jas. M. Trigg who was a kind stepfather to her children. Our father was a delicate child, in fact, at no time in life was he ever robust. His highest weight was about 125 lbs. He was of average height, had fair conplexion, blue eyes, and jet-black hair. In childhood he received such schooling as the neighborhood afforded which was generally of poor character. He walked to old Manchester church where the schools were taught - a distance of more than 3 miles. I think ke cared little for school. The teachers of those days used strenuous methods and seldom spared the rod. I have heard papa say he once received seven whippings in one day at school. He must have been a very mischievous pupil though records of this kind were by no means rare in those days. The teacher he remembered with most gratitude and respect was Rev. R. M. Thrasher who was also a prominent Baptist minister. It was the intention of his parents to send him to the Tulip school where his sister was educated, but by the time he was ready for this school the troubles of secession were at hand and schools were mostly demoralized. Our father was extremely anxious to join the army even at the beginning of the war. His mother, by much persuasion, managed to keep him in school at Arkadelphia during the first two years. He has told me that he could not apply himself to study on account of the excitement of the times. When his parents saw they could hold him no longer they consented for him to volunteer. He entered the service with Co. A. 105th Arkansas Cavalry, under Col. Robert C. Newton to whom he was greatly devoted. He was attended throughout his two years service by one of the family slaves called Willis who was an extremely faithful and devoted servant. His company served in this state altogether and though they were engaged in no great battles, they endured many hardships of a war and fought several very hard battles, among them being Jenkins Ferry and Marks' Mill and Poison Spring. They often endured hunger and other privations. At one time they had nothing to eat for three days. They were at Little Rock during Steele's raid. It was at this time that our boy hero, David Dodd, was executed because he would not give Steele information of the Confederates. Our father knew him and was there during the excitement of his capture and execution by Gen. Steele. After the war our father remained at home until after the death of his mother in 1868. He and his stepfather made one crop on the old place after her death. When they decided to break up housekeeping, Mr. Trigg went to live with his relatives near Arkadelphia. Papa and his sister sold the farm of 160 acres of fine river land for $500. This left him homeless which was unfortunate for him at that age and with his restless disposition. He spent the next few years in Texas working on the cattle ranches and among the wild Indians of the plains. He always looked backward on those exciting years as being among the pleasantest of his life. He knew the plains thoroughly from San Antonia to Kansas where he helped to drive several large herds of cattle. To the end of his life he loved to tell his adventures during the war and on the Texas plains. I think it was in 1876 he returned home. He met our mother soon afterward and they were married in 1878. They lived several years in Clark County, at Gum Springs in 1879, you were born there in 1882, and Charles was born at Curtis in 1887. On Nov. 1st, 1887 we moved to Dalark which was then a sawmill town in its infancy. There were probably eight or ten families living here when we came, none of whom remained here besides Mr. Dale, who was here from the beginning. He and our father's family are the oldest citizens of the town. Papa bought a lot and built a house - the place now owned by the Stuart family - where we lived till the summer of 1901. We then bought a better and larger place from the Evans family, and it has been our home ever since. When I was married to Mr. Dale in 1904 we continued living here with my people. All my children were born here: James McCullough Jr. (called "Jim Mack") was born Jan. 18th, 1906, and died Nov. 12th, 1908. John Rambo Dale, born August 20th, 1908. David Noel Dale, born March 27th, 1910. The homeplace is very dear to me. It has been the scene of many joys and some deep sorrows. I am glad my children can remember my old home and the home of their own childhood and that they can carry with them through life the memory of their grandparents. As you know, Papa loved and made friends with all children, but he was especially devoted to his grandchildren. His chief pleasure in his declining years was to gather them all around him and tell them tales of his childhood, hunting stories and pioneer adventures. During his last ten years he was very feeble and crippled from rheumatism. His decline was gradual and he passed away June 3rd, 1916. He had expressed a wish to be buried at Rock Spring graveyard which is the nearest public cemetery to his old home, so we laid him there. His parents, his mother's family, the Malones, his aunt Matilda Harris, and other relatives are buried on a little mound on the old farm, but it is a low place and so lonely and dismal that it has not been used as a burying ground for many years. Charles Land Rambo, Jr., born near Monroe, La. Jan. 1916. Beall Family I will now tell you what I have learned of our mother's family though my information is very scant. I am still in search of dates and items of history, but fearing I can learn but little more will record what I have hoping to add to it in the future. Our mother was Hattie Calloway Beall, youngest daughter of Maj. Asa Beverley Beall Jr. who lived near Hollywood, Clark County. His wife was Sarah Ann Dover Tuggle. They were married at Benton, Ark. in 1841. They both died rather young, leaving mother, and but little of her father. She has never known much of the history of her people. Some of the items here recorded were given me by her cousin Mrs. Wm. M. Cravens of Ft. Smith. Our aunt Mrs. Cooper has also given me some information, but with all I can get our knowledge is very brief. Our grandfather Beall served as major of militia when a young man and later was prominent in county politics, serving two terms as representative of Clark County. He came of a family who had been prominent statesmen and soldiers in Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland. His father was also named Asa Beverley Beall, and his grandfather was Charles Beall who lived at Hagerstown, Maryland early in the eighteenth century. The family is a very old one in America and was active in public affairs in the colonial days. ... Asa B. Beall Sr., son of Chas. Beall, married Jane Edwards and they emigrated to Kentucky at an early date. ... Our grandmother Beal was Sarah A. D. Tuggle, eldest child of Dr. Ransom Tuggle and his first wife, Harriet Mary Steele. They were all born in Georgia. ... Hattie Callaway Beall - born March 19th, 1859. Married A. E. Rambo. JAMES MARION RAMBO was born 2 May 1845 on the Jacob Rambo homestead near Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Edgefield District, South Carolina. When his father was called for duty during the Civil War, 15-year-old James served in his father's place, was sworn in on 28 Dec 1861, and was assigned to Co. C, 19th Regiment, SC Militia.(423) ( Details: A copy of his pension application is on-line at the SC Archives.) However, when James reached the age for drafting "able-bodied men", his father was required to serve. Both father and son were in the same unit, and James M. was promoted to sergeant in 1865. They were together when Robert was wounded, but James had to move his unit out in retreat and was unable to find out about his father except that he had died. James engaged in many battles in Tennessee, in the seige of Atlanta, and during the battle and burning of Columbia, South Carolina. After the war, James returned to the family home, and in 1870, he married MARY ANN CORLEY, the daughter of Vinson and Charity Corley. She was born in Kirksey Township, Edgefield District on 2 Dec 1845. Soon after the marriage, James M. Rambo bought 200+ acres on Cuffytown Creek a mile north of Kirksey Crossroads where he was a planter, had an apple orchard, and raised sheep and dairy cows. His great interest was in breeding and raising a fine line of horses. He valued education and his sons attended Clemson for agricultural studies. He was active in community affairs, a member of the Masons, and of the Confederate Army Veterans. James held strong Christian beliefs and was active in the Mountain Creek Baptist Church, serving as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Choir Master. Mrs. Mary Rambo died 27 Feb 1916; James died 8 Feb 1926 as a result of injuries after falling off a six-foot fence; and they are buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church. Long after his death, his neighbors spoke of his charisma, his sense of humor, his love for his fellow man, and his devotion to his family.
