"Go Organic!"
Last updated January 9, 2002.
If you have visited our site before, you may have seen our August 1999 Feature Page, which was all about organic foods and the companies that make them. Since then, organic food has only increased in popularity. Because of that, we have decided to give organic foods their own page here at Recycling Rules. The original report on organic foods from last August will be included, as well as any other information we can find. Immediately below is the original report, below that you will find the new information.

The Original Report on Organic Foods--
More and more chemicals are going into the foods we eat. In order to get a better
crop, farmers spray their produce with chemical pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Many apples you see in the
grocery store are actually dyed
red. Bananas are gas-ripened so they look good in the store, but rot as soon as you get them home. Not only are
these chemicals harmful to people, they hurt animals and plants too! The pesticides and fertilizers can wash off
in rain, get into rivers, lakes, or groundwater. Animals and plants that use contaminated water also become contaminated
with the pollutants, which makes a negative effect on the entire ecosystem. In today's world of "faster, cheaper"
there is still a way you can fight the use of these chemicals on our food. If you don't want any pesticide in your
body, we have two simple words of advice, "GO ORGANIC!" Over the last fifteen years, many organic food producers started business as more
people became aware of the environment and our effects on it. Today, it's easier to find organic foods in your
local grocery store, and they are competing with regular food. Because of this increased awareness of organic products,
"Recycling Rules!!" had decided to dedicate August's Feature Page to organic foods and the companies
who make them. We went to our local grocery store, Heinen's, and we took a good look at organic
products and who makes them. We wrote to those companies and looked on-line for company websites or organic information.
Below you will find our organic food directory, which contains the results of our search. NOTE: We are not connected with any organic food company; these
are just the results of our independent search. The list here does not contain every organic food company that
exists! EDEN FOODS, INC. Eden Foods, Inc.

CASCADIAN FARM EARTH'S BEST BABY FOOD ORGANIC VALLEY FAMILY OF FARMS NATURE'S PATH There are many more organic food companies out there, but our survey only included
a few that we've seen. If you'd like to "go organic," check if your local grocery store has an organic
food section. If it doesn't, you can ask the store manager if they'd consider starting one.
Eden Foods, Inc. was founded in 1968 in Michigan, where it was one of
the first organic food companies. Today, their organic farms have gone an average of 15 years without any chemicals
added to the soil. They use an "audit trail" system to insure that the food they sell is 100% organic.
Their system traces the food back to the exact field where it was grown, and on every step of the way after that.
Their definition of "organic" for their products means that the food was made from ingredients that were
grown in soil that has gone without chemicals for at least four years. Eden foods owns and sells products from
the Eden Organic Pasta Company, American Soy Products, New Meridian cannery, and the Hirzel family tomatoes and
sauerkraut. They have 107 products that are certified "organic" and 96% of their products are certified
kosher. Their organic foods range from grains, pasta, fruit products, beans, soy products (Edensoy), and teas.
They also have dozens of organic-food recipes that can be made with their products. Recipe books are available
by writing to Eden Foods.

Interested in the law?
Information added 1/9/02
When we wrote to organic food companies for the Feature Page two years ago,
one of them sent us a copy of the Federal Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 -- that's the law that governs the
production and labelling of organically-produced foods. Below is an important portion of the eight-page text:
the requirements that a product must meet in order to be called "organic"! (For the legal buff -- the
law can be found in the United States Code, Title 7, Chapter 94 and begins with Section [§] 6501.)
§6504 NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTION.
To be sold or labeled as an organically produced agricultural product under this chapter, an agricultural product shall
(1) have been produced and handled without the use of symthetic chemicals, except as otherwise provided in this chapter;
(2) except as otherwise provided in this chapter and excluding livestock, not be produced on land to which any prohibited substances, including synthetic chemicals, have been applied during the 3 years immediately preceeding the harvest of the agricultural products; and
(3) be produced and handled in compliance with an organic plan agreed to by the producer and handler of such product and the certifying agent.

In our continued search for companies that produce organic products, we came
across Shari Ann's Organics, Inc. It
was incorporated in 1992. This Michigan-based company sells 16 organic canned soups, five varieties of organic
refried beans, organic chili, eight kinds of organically-grown beans, and canned pumpkin. In fact, they have the
distiction of producting the first organic canned soup (in 1994). Write to them at the address below to get a nice
personal letter (not a form letter!) from the founder and a complete product listing. They are also available on-line
at www.shariannsorganic.com.

Organic milk. Information
added 8/7/00
Last year, we noted that the Organic Valley Family of Farms (see report above)
created the United States' first organic cheese twelve years ago. Since that time other organic dairy products
have become available. One of them is organic milk, and a notable company in that line is Horizon
Farms. After we get more information from the company, we'll post it here!
