BACKGROUND

I was a great little Cub Scout.  I really loved the crafts, games, and fun.  Mrs. Jacobson was a fine Den Mother and Mr. Jacobson did a pretty good job as Cubmaster.  I got a third place ribbon 2 years running for Pinewood Derby.  Not for speed, but for looks.  One was fire engine red with a bubble top which was a popular thing in the sixties.  I believe these were district level as we did not have a Pack race that I can remember.  I have many great memories from that time.

On to Boy Scouts.  I was a member of the Raccoon patrol and later Patrol Leader for the Eagle Patrol and Troop Quartermaster.  I left when the Scoutmaster, Mr. Leonard, apparently quit over a disagreement with the council. Our Committee Chair took over temporarily, but was not cut from the same cloth.  So I became disenchanted with things. Our troop had a bus and went to Yellowstone every year.  I could not afford to go and no accommodations were made for kids like myself.  Consequently, I never got started on merit badges.  This probably led to my decision to quit also.  Even then, I really wish I had been talked into returning because I enjoyed it so much.

Many years later, I had two boys.  I often asked the Den Leader of my son's den if he needed help.  He did not have an assistant.  I wish I had known about 2 deep leadership then.  But he replied that he could take care of things.  When his job caused him to step down, I was asked to be Webelos Den Leader.  From there, things just kind of happened and Scouting became my hobby.  My wife thinks I'll probably be cremated in my uniform and ashes spread over Philmont.

I have become interested in Scouting's history and collect Scout books.  Particularly Cub Scout books because even the old ones will give you some great program ideas.

I learned as a Leader that if someone offers help, then you find them something immediately.....anything.  Also, let your Den Leaders know this tip.  The potential leader will contact them first and can be turned on or turned off very quickly.  I also have learned that when a boy quits Scouting, go after him!
