Final Settlement in the Estate of John Hall

Probate Record Book A, Page 327 of the court in Scott County for the November Term, 1846 contains the Final Settlement in the Estate of John Hall. The report shows that the estate was opened at the county seat, Lexington, on October 30, 1844 and that Matthew Henning was appointed Administrator. He gave bond in the amount of $600.00 with James Middleton as surety. The report shows that John Hall died on September 30, 1844.

An Inventory was filed listing the personal items in the estate. Some of those items were the following:

The inventory totaled $279 1/2.

The final account shows that most items were taken by his widow, Margaret Hall, and there was a sale or auction of the items she did not take. John Henning bought the cradle for $1.00; John Blair the scythe for $1.00; Wm. Kennedy a 1/2 interest in a chisel for 12 1/2 cents; Stephen Johnson a 1/2 interest in a chain for 18 3/4 cents; James Middleton the clock for 25 cents. James Robb, A. Amick, John R. Amick, L. Stark and Matthew Henning also attended the sale and made purchases. The sale totaled $130.54 and was held on November 20, 1844.

The final account shows the payment of debts with this money and there was very little cash left for the widow. The final account did not list any expenses for doctor, funeral or administrator's charges and court costs.
