The Johnson and Kendall Families

Eliza Kendall and Archibald Johnson (Hannah Johnson’s parents)

Eliza Kendall and Archibald Johnson were born on the same day - August 27, 1831, Archibald in Illinois and Eliza in Ohio. Archibald B. Johnson's first wife was Mary E. Elzy. They were married in Floyd County, Indiana in December of 1851 (Book 3 page 387). It is not known how that marriage ended. Archibald B. Johnson married Eliza Ellen Kendall in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana on July 2, 1854. (Marriage Book 4, Page 80).

Afterwards they lived in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana. Archibald B. Johnson owned a brick mill and made the bricks for the courthouse in Martinsville. He died there August 20, 1867 at the age of 36 years and is buried at Martinsville at the Mitchell Cemetery. It is said that Archibald's father, Hezekiah came on horseback to the funeral and when he left that was the last time the family heard of him. It is known that land was deeded from Casper Amback to Hezekiah F. and wife, Hannah B. Johnson in Sullivan County, Indiana by deeds dated May 25, 1863 and June 1, 1863.

There are some marriage records in New Albany about Archibald's half sisters. A family Bible gives other information. Mary Elizabeth Johnson was born Feb. 11, 1840 and married Thomas Ogg in New Albany on August 15, 1857. Sarah Jane Johnson was born on Dec. 17, 1832 and married William Turner in New Albany on Oct. 9, 1859. The Bible also lists the following: Hanna - July 5, 1834, Malinda - June 15, 1837, William C. - Aug. 11, 1841, Robert Kemp April 26, 1844, and Thomas Jefferson - Sept. 17, 1847. There is a marriage record for Hannah Johnson and Jacob Elzy in Floyd County on May 16, 1850.

When Archibald Johnson died in Martinsville, Eliza Ellen Kendall Johnson was 36 years old and left with five children. She was also pregnant with her last child, Hannah Caroline Johnson. Ellen’s father, Thomas Kendall, went to Martinsville with a spring wagon and brought her and her children to Scott County.

Ellen Kendall later married W. P. Smith between 1870 and 1880. He was a farmer. They lived near Estil in Scott County. Estil is now a vanished settlement located near the Estil Cemetery. It is said that the marriage did not last very long.

A newspaper clipping said the following:
Last Thursday Mrs. Eliza E. Smith was 60 years old and more than 50 friends and relatives spent the day with her. Her son, F. B. Johnson of Jeffersonville, Samuel Trulock and family and Perry Kendall and family of near Austin and Samuel Hall and family of Lexington were among the number present. Although much surprised at such a gathering of friends, she enjoyed their company and the day was pleasantly passed by all. Her many friends wish a long and happy life. A highly palatable repast was spread and enjoyed by those present. That it was excellent, the samples of cake and fruit placed upon our desk fully attest.
She spent the last five years of her life with her son, Charles Henry Johnson in Indianapolis.

Ellen Kendall Johnson Smith died July 22, 1896. She is buried at Estil Cemetery. Her children erected a tombstone in her honor. The inscription reads: "Elizae, wife of W. P. Smith, widow of A. B. Johnson, born Aug. 27, 1831, died July 22, 1896."

Obituary of Eliza Kendall Smith

Her obituary appeared in a local newspaper:

Mrs. Eliza Smith died last night at her home on the old Roswell farm of a complication of diseases, aged 65 years. The deceased was the mother of F. B. and Charles Johnson and a sister of A. J. Kendall of this city. She was highly respected, a most excellent lady and a member of the Christian Church. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the Christian Church, at Scottsburg and the remains will be interred at the Estell Cemetery.

The Kendalls (Hannah Johnson’s maternal grand-parents)

Ellen Kendall Johnson's father was Thomas Kendall, who was born November 29, 1797 in Maryland. He was a very aristocratic old fellow and at one time had considerable wealth. He was a sympathizer for the South during the Civil War.
Ellen Kendall's mother's name is not known. In the 1880 census she stated that her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Her mother apparently died young and Ellen was reared by her step-mother, Sarah Campbell Kendall, who was born in 1810 in Indiana. Thomas and Sarah Campbell Kendall were in Clark County, Indiana as early as 1849. They purchased 100 acres of land near Henryville in Grant 273.

(Deed Book 39, Page 322). They acquired additional land in 1852 and 1853.

(Deed Book 52, pages 524-528). Thomas and Sarah Kendall sold the land in Clark County on February 2, 1863 for $4,000.00. (Deed Book 52, page 527 & 528).

They then moved to Scott County, Indiana. On September 30, 1863 they purchased 155 acres for $2,250.00. This land is located on highway 356, 2 miles east of Vienna in Section 34 and is also near the Estil community. (Deed Book Q, page 645).

On July 28, 1870 they bought 20 acres located about 2 miles south of Lexington on the Charlestown Road. They sold this on Feb. 18, 1873. (Deed Book U, pages 332 & 333). On April 14, 1881 they sold the 155 acres to Wm H. Whitlatch, Sr. (Deed Book Z, page 329).

Sarah Kendall purchased part of out lot 3 in Lexington on April 7, 1884 and she and her husband sold this on April 29, 1886. (Book B-1, page 187 and Book B-2, page _).

The Kendalls had annual reunions, usually the Sunday before Labor Day. The following appeared in early Scott County Journal newspapers:

The second annual reunion of the Kendall family was held Saturday September 4 at the home of Mrs. A. D. Rice near Frankfort. (Indiana). Several years ago Thomas Kendall came to this state from Ohio and settled near Vienna. He was the father of nine children and the three living, with many relatives gathered for the occasion. They are J. J. Kendall, of Jeffersonville, Mrs. Mary Dages, of Louisville and Mrs. Charlotte Caldwell of Scottsburg. Well filled baskets provided a bounteous dinner which was spread in the dinning room of the Rice home. After dinner a short religious service was held by Rev. Pierce. Those from a distance were: T. A. Kendall, wife and daughter of Chicago, J. J. Kendall and wife, Frank Johnson and daughter of Jeffersonville and Charles Dages and wife of Louisville. More than seventy persons attended the festivities. Kendall reunion held at the home of Mrs. Ambrose Caldwell, northwest of Underwood, (Indiana) last Sunday makes a day long to be remembered by fifty merry participants. Several years ago Thomas Kendall came from Ohio to this state and was the father of nine children. On this occasion the only three living, with many relatives gathered for a reunion. Well filled baskets carried by the attendants provided a bounteous dinner which was spread upon the lawn. The bright balmy day added to the enjoyment of a very pleasant occasion. From a distance were the following: J. J. Kendall and wife, Thomas Kendall and wife, Frank Johnson and two daughters, Jeffersonville; Charles and Walter Dages and their wives, Louisville; Mrs. Sarah Kendall, Daily Rice and wife, Johnson township; and Rev. W. H. Cranford and Mrs. C. P. Harrison, Scottsburg. More than fifty persons enjoyed the festivities.

Thomas Kendall died June 1, 1886 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 2 days.

His obituary appeared in the Scott County Journal on June 3, 1886:

Thomas Kendall died last Tuesday morning about half past nine at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Caldwell just west of town, at the advanced age of 87 years. He had been in feeble health for some time. Deceased was the father of Perry Kendall, a well to do farmer of Jennings Township. The remains were interned yesterday at the Estil graveyard.

Sarah Campbell Kendall, the step-mother of Eliza Ellen Kendall, died July 19, 1887 and is also buried at Estil Cemetery near Vienna in Scott County.

Her will was probated October 3, 1887 and appears in Will Book A, pages 439-440 in the Scott County Clerk's Office:

The Johnsons (Hannah Johnson’s paternal grand-parents)

A family Bible shows that Hezekiah F. Johnson was born in Illinois in 1813. He was listed in the 1830 census as living in Hamilton County, Illinois. He married Feraby Patten on April 22, 1830 in McLeansboro, Illinois. The marriage license appears in Book "A" page 14, marriage #143. This license refers to the woman as "Terley Patton" but this was copied from earlier records in which her name was listed as "Feraby Patten." They were married by Rob't Moore, Minister of the Gospel.
Hezekiah F. Johnson and Feraby Patten Johnson had one son, Archibald B. Johnson, who was born August 27, 1831, probably in Illinois. Feraby Patten Johnson later died. On September 14, 1852 a marriage license was issued in Hamilton County, Illinois to H. F. Johnson and Polly Hanes. This license is recorded in Book "B" as license number 1220. (It is not known if H. F. Johnson is the same person as Hezekiah F. Johnson.)

Hezekiah Johnson bought land in Morgan County, Indiana in 1831, 1832, and 1834.

Hezekiah F. Johnson was in Floyd County, Indiana in 1850. He bought land in that county from Ezekiel R. Day on Sept. 7, 1850. The 1850 census for his household in Floyd County list the following:
