Margaret Ann Henning Hall

Margaret Hall Lives On

Margaret Ann Hall lived in Indiana for another 47 years after her husband died at the age of 37 (see John Hall's Estate ). The 1850 census shows that Margaret Hall was still living on the farm with her seven children and the children ranged in age from 19 years to 8 years old. The 1860 census shows that Margaret Hall was still on the farm and that five of her children were still living with her: Eliza Hall, age 27, a milliner; Robert Hall, age 24, a carpenter; Rachel Hall, age 21; William Hall, age 19, a carpenter's apprentice; and John Hall, Jr., age 17, a farmer. There was also living in her household at this time James Cooley, who was 3 years old and who was born in New Jersey. By this time her other two sons, Francis Hall and James Hall, had married and each had their own homes in Lexington Township.

Deed Record Book Q, Page 428 shows that on August 12, 1861 Margaret Hall (by her X mark), Francis Hall and Elizabeth Hall, his wife; Robert Hall, James Hall and Sarah Ann Hall, his wife, Eliza Hall, William Hall and Rachael Hall, all of Scott County, Indiana and heirs at law of John Hall, deceased, conveyed the 99 acres of land to John Kennedy for $1,000.00. The deed was acknowledged before James Powers, County Auditor, and recorded February 17, 1862. It is interesting to note that the youngest child, John Hall, Jr., did not sign this deed and at that time he would have been 19 years of age.

There is a record that on November 5, 1866 Margaret Hall, age 56, filed "Mother's Application for Army Pension" (Number 8990). The application shows that she was the widow of John Hall, Sr. and the mother of John Hall, Jr., deceased, who was a Corporal in Company K in the 66th regiment of Indiana Volunteers and who died while in service at Richmond, Kentucky on or about August 30, 1862 from wounds being received in battle on August 30, 1862. The application said that her son left no widow or minor child under 16; that her domicile is Lot No. 122 on Cherry Street between Hill and Poplar Streets in Lexington, Scott County, Indiana and was signed by her x mark. Affidavits of Nancy Middleton and Elizabeth Kennedy, her sisters, were attached along with other affidavits which said that John Hall, Jr. was the only support for Margaret Hall. A pension of $8.00 per month was granted on May 1, 1867 to commence on August 30, 1867.

The 1870 census shows that Margaret Hall was living at Lexington. In her household was her son-in-law and daughter, John and Rachel Hall Richardson and their four children: Mary J. Richardson, age 8 years; John Richardson, age 5 years; Charles I. Richardson, age 3 years; and Margaret Richardson, age 8 months. It said that John was a farmer, age 29 years and Rachel a house keeper, age 31 years.

The 1880 census shows that Margaret Hall was still living with John and Rachel Hall Richardson and that John and Rachel were farming and now had eight children. It also showed that James Cooley was still living with them.
