The McClanahan Family

Francis McClanahan and Armilda Moore (Sarah McClanahan’s parents)

Francis McClanahan was born in Granham Township in Jefferson County, Indiana near Deputy on January 6, 1817. He married Armilda W. Moore in Scott County on January 16, 1837 (Marriage Book A, Page 126). He was listed in the Scott County Assessor's Book for 1839 as owning 46 acres. He was a farmer by occupation. His farm was located near Lexington on Pleasant Ridge Road (150 acres in Clark's Grant 292). The farm was acquired in various tracts starting in 1852 from the heirs of his father-in-law, Thomas S. Moore, Sr. (Deed Book M, pages 274, 307, 310-311 and 323).

He and his wife had seven known children. All children were probably born in Lexington Township:

Sarah Ann McClanahan was born January 8 p 1838. She married James Hall on Nov. 4, 1858 and died on December 5, 1881.

William H. McClanahan was born in 1841. He married Rebecca E. Fleeming in Scott County on Jan. 1, 1863. He served in Company C, 38th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. A deed dated March 17, 1888 (Book 3, page 367) made in the settlement of Francis McClanahan's estate shows that William H. McClanahan was living in Johnson County, Indiana.

James Henry McClanahan was born in May, 1846. He married Sarah C. Williams in Scott County on October 11, 1870. Sarah was reared by the James Middleton family. There is one known descendant, Maxine Krause, Rt. 2, Denmark, Wisconsin 54208.

Henrietta McClanahan was born February 2, 1849. She died Nov. 21, 1861 and is buried at Lexington Cemetery.

George T. McClanahan was born October 20, 1852. He died Nov.7, 1861 and is buried at Lexington Cemetery.

Mary L. McClanahan was born in 1853-54. She married a Wiseman. She is buried at Wells Cemetery in Jefferson County, Indiana.

Florence E. (Flora) McClanahan was born in 1857 or 1858. She married Thomas Hezakiah Johnson (son of Archibald B. Johnson and Eliza Ellen Kendall). They moved to Sunnyside, Washington. They had four children: Nettie C. Johnson, born 1882; Everitt Gilbert Johnson, 1884-1949; Ella May Johnson, born 1888 and Blanch Johnson born 1891.

The 1870 Census shows that Francis and Armilda McClanahan were rearing their grandson, Sam Hall, then 10 years old. It also showed that Francis had his mother, Lucy McClanahan, age 76 living with him. The 1880 census showed that Sam Hall was still living with them. Francis McClanahan died June 1, 1886. He is buried at Lexington Cemetery. His will was probated in 1886. The Executor was his son-in-law, James Hall. It also mentioned his son-in-law Thomas H. Johnson. Witnesses to the will were his brother, William N. McClanahan and James Powers. The heirs were mentioned, but not named. The book in which his will was recorded is now missing. This information comes from abstracts of the will records.

The 1870 census shows that Armilda Moore was born in Kentucky. Her date of birth as October 17, 1820. Scott County Probate Book A, page 122 shows that Thomas S. Moore was the father of Armilda Moore. Her mother was Sarah Moore. The maiden name of her mother is not known. She is buried at Lexington cemetery. Armilda Moore McClanahan died the following spring, March 8, 1887. She is buried by her husband at Lexington Cemetery.

The 150 acre farm was sold March 17, 1888 for $2,250.00 to Gustav F. Wahl. (Deed Book 3, page 367). The deed was signed by the heirs of Francis McClanahan, deceased: William H. McClanahan and Rebecca , his wife; James Hall and Sarah Hall, his wife; Samuel E. Hall and Hannah C. Hall, his wife, and George T. Hall and Eliza J. Hall, both unmarried, and James McClanahan and Sarah C. McClanahan, his wife, of Jasper County, Indiana.

Robert McClanahan and Lucy Davis (Sarah McClanahan’s grandparents)

Robert McClanahan may have been in Madison County, Kentucky in 1810. He married Lucy Davis in Madison, Indiana in 1814. Robert McClanahan was born between 1780 and 1790 probably in Kentucky. He died by drowning in Big Creek about 1836 in Granham Township, Jefferson County, Indiana hear Deputy. He was a farmer and acquired a parcel of land near Deputy from the government. Those who have researched Robert McClanahan say that his ancestors probably came from Northern Ireland and settled first in Pennsylvania and then went to Virginia. Apparently there were three McClanahans in America in the middle 1700's and a connection has not been made to Robert McClanahan's parents. It is known that Robert McClanahan fought in the War of 1812. The article on Milton Noakes in the book entitled 19th Century Personalities in Scott County states that Robert McClanahan's father fought in the Revolutionary War and served for seven years.

Robert McClanahan's parents were Andrew McClanahan and Sarah Cochran. Andrew McClanahan appeared on the 1782 Tax list in Fauquier Co, Va. and on the 1800 Tax list in Madison Co, Ky. The name also appeared on record when he filed a law suit from White Co, of Territory of Illinois on Jan 12,1818 and June 1, 1818 (Book M page 500).The suit was against Cornelious Dougherty & Heirs. He had purchased 228 acres of land from Cornelious Daugherty & wife Sept 6,1796. Sarah Cochran was the daughter of Samuel Cochran and Sarah Woods, probably from Pennsylvania. She was still living in 1810 in Madison County,Kentucky per the 1810 Census.

Lucy Davis was born July 29, 1792 and died near Lexington September 17, 1875. She is buried on the Levi Bridgewater lot in the Lexington Cemetery. (Levi was related to the Noakes family). One record was found that she was born in North Carolina, and another that birth was in Virginia. Her father was Francis Davis (1760-1818) of Virginia. Francis Davis served in the Revolutionary War. He is buried in an orchard on Malcomson farm at the top of Hanover (Indiana) Hill (DAR). Davis graves are located on sec. 31-4-10. This is the Davis land
purchased and recorded in 1814. Francis Davis was married to Mildred Dollins, the daughter of Presley Dollins and granddaughter of John Dollins.
The following is from "The Descendants of Richard Dollins of Albermarle County, Virginia" by M Coburn Williams:

Biography: Little is known of John or Sarah Dollins. The birth dates for their children are found in the Northumberland County records. Sarah Dollins settled the estate of her husband on 17 March 1725. A Sarah Dollins witnessed a land transaction in Orange County in 1738, so perhaps she and some of her children were in Orange County by that time. John Dollins (1712-1770) lived out his life in Northumberland County. His wife's name was Hannah. He had one daughter of record, Rebecca, born 29 July 1770. Rebecca had one illegitimate daughter, Sally Dollins, who was born 1 May 1789.

Thomas S. and Sarah Moore (Sarah McClanahan’s maternal grandparents)

Thomas S. Moore was born January 20, 1792. His wife, Sarah Moore was born January 14, 1796. They were from Kentucky, probably from Henry County. Deed Book E, page 222 shows that Thomas S. Moore purchased 150 acres in Grant 292 on Dec. 25, 1833 and at that time they were residents of Kentucky. Thomas and Sarah Moore had the following children:

Thomas S. Moore, Jr., born Nov. 24, 1824 and married Hennetta and in 1846 was living in Clark County, Indiana.

Milton G. Moore, born 1812, died 1834 and is buried in the Lexington Cemetery.

Mary Anne Moore, born Dec. 12, 1818, married John Davis (1811-1872). Mary died Oct. 29, 1890 and she and her husband are buried at Lexington Cemetery.

Armilda W. Moore, wife of Francis McClanahan .

Eliza Ann Moore (also known as Louisa Ann Moore). She married Abraham Vest.

(Deed Books M, page 323, J, pages 274, 307, 310 and 311, Book J, page 303 shows this information). Thomas S. Moore died August 10, 1834 in Scott County. His will was probated in Scott County. The executor was Barnet Whitlatch. He is buried at Lexington Cemetery. His stone is now broken. Sarah Moore later married Peter Bottorff in Clark County, Indiana.
