Dan Redmond is a freelance photographer based in Arlington, VA who specializes in marketing photography for performing artists.
The photograph is your first audition. It shows what you are about, what you want your work to be. Above all, it must be an image that LOOKS LIKE YOU. As an actor, you have a different set of experiences and talents that makes your work meaningful and exciting; you bring this personal background into your work on a set, whether it be for stage or screen. The
photography used for marketing your work should also convey this sense of excitement, wonder, and passion that you have for your craft. The image you use as a marketing tool needs to show us who YOU are, and what you can achieve. What will make your photograph different than others who may look very similar to you?
Images that portray charisma, animation, and passion for the work that you do become a successful reflection of YOUR personality; If I were a director reviewing your photograph, I might wonder "what does this person have to offer me?" Tell me the answer to that in your photograph.
To achieve these results, a collaboration between the photographer, makeup artist, and actor must all play equal roles in the process, with each person being no more important than another for a successful shoot. The photographer captures the personality that an actor brings to the shoot. His command of lighting, photography and printing will make the most of the personality of that individual actor. The makeup person emphasizes the strong features of one's look, without looking "made up". The actor brings enthusiasm, energy, and a desire to make photographs that represent his talent.
