Children's Sermon: February, 1997
Children's
Sermon of the Month
February, 1998 Title: "A Night to Remember"
Materials Needed: ashes in a container
Point of Lesson: We Should Remember God's Love for Us
Scripture Basis: Psalm 23 [Special
Ash Wednesday Sermon]
Welcome the children. Remind the children that this is February
and that we celebrate both Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday in
February. "Girls and boys, this month we celebrate two very special
days. We all know about Valentine's Day, but what day do we put
ashes on our forehead?" [Hold ashes where everyone can see]
"That's right, girls and boys, it's Ash Wednesday.
This is a very special day, because it is a day when we tell
God we are sorry for times we have hurt other people, and God reminds
us that God loves us very, very much." Look around at the
children.
"Boys and girls, when you do something bad, what do you
say? [Prompt the children to say "I'm Sorry']. And when
the person we have hurt says "that's all right, I'm still your
friend," or "We understand; we love you very much," that makes us
feel very, very good, doesn't it? That's what God tells us when we
come for Ash Wednesday." We say we are sorry and God reminds us how
much He loves us." Close with a prayer.
Maturity check: Children should be reminded
of God's love at all times, especially when talking about being sorry
for things. Integrating children into great traditions of the Church
like Ash Wednesday is very important, and instilling thoughts of
God's love is an essential part of that tradition.
