Children's Sermon: May, 1997

Children's Sermon of the Month

June, 1998 Title:  "Fixing Up!"

Materials Needed:    Hammer, nail, board or shingle

Point of Lesson:  God Makes All Things New

Scripture Basis: Revelation 21:5

"Good morning, girls and boys! I brought some things with me today. Does anyone know what this is?" Hold up hammer and nail. "That's right. We use a hammer and nails to fix things when they get broken, don't we?" Hold up board or shingle. "We might fix a hole in our roof or a broken window or maybe a table that wasn't quite steady. Have you ever helped your mom or dad fix something?"

"Girls and boys, God fixes things, too. Sometimes we get mad at a friend and have to say we are sorry. God helps us to get back together with our friend. Or maybe we break something at home that makes Mom or Dad really upset. When we tell Mom or Dad that we are sorry and we want to help fix it, God helps all of us, Moms and Dads and kids, put things back the right way. You see, boys and girls, God made a beautiful world for us, and God wants to help us keep it beautiful. Sometimes a storm may hit and make a hole in our roof, or we may hit a ball and break a window. We have to fix those things. And some times we have to fix up things with Mom and Dad or with our friends. Remember that God makes all things new. Even when you think you have messed up so bad that no one can fix it, remember that God makes all things new if we just ask. " Close with a simple prayer asking God's help in repairing relationships.

Maturity check: Making the jump from concrete things (a broken window) to abstract (a broken relationship) can be difficult for younger children. Emphasis the idea that God makes all things new and that children should not be discouraged then they make mistakes or break things.
