Children's Sermon: November, 1996
Children's
Sermon of the Month
November, 1998 Title: "Being Thankful"
Materials Needed: Cornucopia
Point of Lesson: We have much for which to be thankful.
Scripture Basis: Psalm 19
Welcome the children. Hold up the cornucopia. Ask if anyone
knows what it is. (The children will likely surprise you by
knowing!) Take out some of the fruits and grains you have put in the
cornucopia. "Look at some of the things we have in our cornucopia,
girls and boys." Talk about some of the items and how they are
important in our daily life for food. "What if we didn't have apples
or grapes, boys and girls?"
Ask some children in advance to write down something for which
they are thankful. Ask them during the children's sermon to read what
they wrote down. Ask them to place their note of thanks in the
cornucopia.
"Girls and boys, we have much for which we are thankful, don't
we? Let's thank God for so much wonderful things in our lives."
Close with a prayer of thanksgiving.
Parent Involvement: Thanksgiving is a good chance to involve
families. If room permits, invite the families of the children to
join them in placing notes of thanks in the cornucopia. This can
also be done in a separate program.
Maturity check: Talking abstractly about
giving thanks is difficult for some children. By providing a
tangible action children can better relate to the action of giving
thanks.
