Children's Sermon: August, 1996

Children's Sermon of the Month

September, 1997 Title: "Two Special Ladies"

Materials Needed: Pictures of Princess Diana, Mother Teresa

Point of Lesson: Reach out to other people (Matt. 25:32-40)

Welcome the children. Ask them to sit in a semicircle around you where each child will be able to see the pictures. "Good morning girls and boys! If you have tried to watch your favorite cartoon shows on Saturday morning this month, you know that something else has been on instead. I have two pictures here. Does anyone know who these people are? [Give the children a chance to answer.] That's right, Princess Diana and Mother Teresa. They both died. And everyone is very sad because we all cared very much about each one of these ladies. But none of us knew either one of these ladies personally. What is it about them that caused so many people to love them so much?"

"Well, boys and girls, Princess Diana had crowns and gowns and glamor, but she took time to meet with people who were very sick. She touched people with terrible diseases. She talked with boys and girls just like you who had been horribly injured in wars and fighting. And Mother Teresa lived a very different life, with no crowns and gowns and no glamor. And she spent all her life among the very poorest people of India, helping old people who were sick but also girls and boys like you who had no home and no place to sleep at night. We remember these two ladies who were so very different but who had this in common: they reached out to touch people who needed help, just like Jesus! We can't go to India or Africa to help people like Mother Teresa or Princess Diana did, but we can be a friend to someone who needs us, right here in our town. [Close with a prayer for courage to reach out to other people around us.]

Maturity check: Television is a powerful medium for children. Seeing the pictures of famous people has a impact that lasts. Seize the opportunity to help children relate the good deeds of those people to Christ-like actions they can do.
