Much of the goodwill that traveling American citizens encounter overseas is due to the fact that the rest of the world is well aware that the current White House resident is only in the highest office in the world because of a constitutional fluke (and some poorly designed ballots and other irregularities in a state governed by his brother, and five Republicans on the Supreme Court). They have not forgotten that Gore beat Bush by 543,895 votes, and that the combined Democratic/Green supporters outnumbered the Republicans by 3,426,850 votes. So it is possible for them to blame Bush without blaming the people who didn't vote for him – people who chose to live under a peaceful blue/green coalition government, not a bellicose blood-red machine spreading war and greed and pollution and fear -- especially fear.
Of course it's possible that John Kerry does not agree with you (or me) on every issue and that there may be candidates on your ballot this November with whom you do share a special spiritual affinity. This is not the election where we have the luxury of indulging in those preferences -- EVEN IF THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES FROM OUR STATE HAVE ALREADY BEEN SAFELY PLACED IN ONE COLUMN OR THE OTHER BY OUR TRUSTED POLLSTERS AND PUNDITS. Imagine how much harder it will be for Jeb or Diebold or the Supremes to steal another election if the popular vote margin is 3 or 4 million rather than a mere half a million (that many people on the streets of New York to protest a coming war is merely "a focus group" in the eyes of our current leader). Your vote against G.W.Bush matters even if you're voting in Vermont, or New York, or Texas.
